Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Sophia Blue

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Dancing to the Flashdance soundtrack with my mom in the living room when I was about 4 years old. What a feelin’!
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I’m late to music. I wrote my first song in December 2023.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My single, “Medicine” out in early 2026 is inspired by a scene from the Matrix. The red and blue pills held by Orpheus always looked like NyQuil capsules to me. I thought to myself, what if Neo asked for some time to decide which pill to take? Or took the other one? How would Orpheus respond? What would he be thinking?
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Blues Rock
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? Music theory
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My voice and my FU guitar.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Write you a song. Hanson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sq0AuYi7KtM
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision? Writing music helps me process my emotions and everyday experiences. The two
are inextricably intertwined.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? Each piece is designed to act as a conduit for listeners to express their emotions.
Have you ever wanted to say “Mind Your business” or “I’m busy”? How about, “I’m gonna let you learn the hard way”?
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Patience. Music isn’t just fun to play, it’s hard work.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
The 02 arena. SummerFest, New Orleans Jazz Fest
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Men – Hanson. The first time I heard MMMbop, I was a fan. I’ve never heard anyone scat in a pop song the way they did in that one. I also appreciate their tight harmonies and simple relatable melodies that allow their fans to sing along to every song. They’ve also got great business acumen as independent musicians.
Woman – Mariah Carey. She is a prolific songwriter whose skills are often outshined by her voice. I also admire her resilience after her Daydream album was snubbed at the 1996 Grammy awards.
Woman – Avril Lavigne. She’s also a prolific songwriter who has been overlooked because she chose to go against the grain. (My understanding is that her record label initially wanted to make her a country artist.)

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I’ve always wanted to sing the National Anthem at a professional sporting event in the USA.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? That my inner world is just as rich as theirs.
