What is your earliest memory connected to music?

When I was a child, I often listened to my grandfather’s old cassette tapes at home. The warmth and slight noise of tape left a deep impression on me — it was my first experience of feeling emotion through sound.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I started playing guitar as a teenager, writing songs in my room as a way to express feelings I couldn’t easily put into words. Over time, that quiet habit turned into a form of communication and connection with others.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

The band namedpeal” was formed in Tokyo among university friends who shared a love for expressive, and experimental rock. The band’s name comes from the word “peal,” meaning a resonant sound that spreads — like a bell. It represents our wish for our music to quietly reach someone’s heart, wherever they are.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Our sound blends the precision of math rock, the dreamy textures of shoegaze and dream pop, and the emotional depth of post-rock — all wrapped in a melodic, human warmth. It’s music that moves between solitude and hope.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

I learned to accept the distorted and imperfect parts of myself. Instead of trying to fill in what I lack, I began focusing on how to make those “missing pieces” meaningful within the music. Once I shifted my perspective, I slowly started creating songs that I could genuinely feel satisfied with.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

We mainly use GarageBand in Macbook Air, with M2 from MOTU as audio interface for composing and recording. Main mic for vocal and acoustic guitar was Beta 58 by SHURE, and main gears were Fender Telecaster Thinline and Presicion Bass. So simple tools, but it’s the atmosphere and feeling in the room that truly shape the songs.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

We’ve been listening to American Football, caroline, people in the box and cabs lately — all of them create worlds that feel deeply personal yet universal.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Many of our songs are inspired by moments of loss, change, and rediscovery. We try to turn those quiet emotions into something that others can find comfort in.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

That even in loneliness, there’s light. We hope our music can remind someone that they’re not alone — that beauty still exists in the smallest moments.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That vulnerability can be strength. Opening through sound connects us in a way nothing else can.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Glastonbury Festival and Fuji Rock Festival in Japan have been the dream festival, but our mission is to share our music anywhere in the world, to connect with people, and to make sure that no one in the audience is left behind — so that everyone can have a meaningful and joyful time together. As long as we can achieve that, we would love to perform at any venue around the globe.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

American Football, Sigur Rós, toe, and R.E.M are artists I have always deeply admired. I’ve always looked up to musicians who maintain their independence, so in some ways, direct musical collaborations can feel challenging for me.
However, I would love to work with artists who share similar values and creative philosophies — in any form. I’m very interested in collaborating beyond the traditional framework of making a song together, and exploring projects that aren’t limited to music alone.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

To continue creating music that resonates across borders — and to bring our sound to live audiences around the world.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

Those our songs are small reflections of real life — fragile, imperfect, but sincere. If they can find even a piece of themselves in our music, that’s all we could hope for.
