Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Jay Blaze Official

Right now, my focus is on shaping a sound that blends Afro-soul, emotion, and real-life storytelling. I’m building music that feels honest and relatable, something people can listen to and say, “Yeah, I’ve lived that too.”
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
One of my earliest memories actually came through my cousin, who was making music before me. He was trying to record a new song but couldn’t afford the studio session, so I offered to pay for it. While we were there vibing, he asked if I wanted to jump on the track. That was my first time ever recording, just a 19-second verse, but something opened up in me that day. That’s really the moment that sparked everything.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
After that session with my cousin, I realized how much I loved the whole process, the beat, the recording, the atmosphere of the studio. It felt natural. And it made sense because I grew up in church as a choir member and a drummer, so music has always been part of my life. That first recording just pushed me into what my heart already knew.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
This project represents a new season for me. It’s inspired by growth, healing, and becoming a better version of myself. Every track comes from a real moment in my life, the struggles, the love, the breakthroughs, the lessons. I want people to feel that honesty in the sound.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
My sound is Afro-soul mixed with emotion. Warm melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and rhythms that feel familiar but fresh. It’s storytelling wrapped in vibe, something you feel first before you even start thinking.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I learned that the best music comes from truth. When I stopped trying to imitate and leaned into who I am, everything changed, my confidence, my tone, the way people connected with the songs.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
A simple setup works for me: a good mic, headphones, and my DAW, usually Logic or FL Studio. And honestly, voice notes on my phone are the secret weapon. Ideas hit anywhere, and I capture them immediately before the emotion fades.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I gravitate toward indie artists who mix soul with African roots, artists who feel raw and intentional. I respect anyone building their own lane with heart and authenticity.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Everything I’ve lived through shows up in the music. The highs, the setbacks, the lessons, they shape my sound and push me to create with purpose. My vision is built on making people feel seen and understood.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want people to walk away with hope, strength, and connection. Even when the music is emotional, there’s always light in there somewhere. I want listeners to feel like they’re not alone.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Patience. This journey takes time, your sound, your identity, your breakthrough. Music taught me that every season has purpose, and every step matters.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Afro Nation and Essence Festival are high on my list. Those stages carry a different kind of energy, the audience feels the music deeply.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d love to work with someone rooted in soul like Asa, or someone with depth and range like Burna Boy. They bring emotion and real storytelling into their music, and I connect with that.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music?
You can find me on all major platforms. Spotify, Apple Music, Audiomack, YouTube, under Jay Blaze Official.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I want to grow into a globally recognized artist, touring, collaborating, and connecting with people across the world. I’m building something long-term, something honest, and I want my music to reach hearts far beyond borders.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That everything I make comes from a real place. I want people to feel the heart behind the music, the vulnerability, the passion, the growth, and feel like they’re part of the journey with me.
