Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Jean Anthony

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory was when I first saw my dad trying to learn guitar. I don’t think he ever learned though, but for me it was interesting. My family was always playing something, especially my uncles. It was not until years later when I was 16 years old where I gave the guitar a chance.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It all started as a method of dealing with stress and anxious moments. I always said to my friends, “I write because I can’t write five thoughts at a time.” It was a way of dealing with the overthinking. All eventually led to my guitar and me creating melodies out of my life experiences.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Everything that I have written has been about falling in love or getting my heart broken, so my current project doesn’t steer far away from that, only that now it is from a stand point of “I’m in love but I don’t know if she will give it a try.” Kind of an overthinking situation but mustering the courage to ask her out.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It sounds like when you first fall in love, excited, jumpy, shouting and jumping with friends kind of vibe. It can also sound like a lonely evening sitting at a beach watching the sunset.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? Patience, not every song will sound good, will tell a good story. I used to pressure myself
to write the “best song” all it brought was writer’s block. So it has taught me to live a little, gather experiences so I can return with a fresh mind to speak about what I have gone through.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My notebook, a smooth pen, a quiet place and my guitar. I usually write better in quiet
spaces.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Im from Puerto Rico and i make spanish songs but right now the Artist Will Linley has me on a choke hold. My favorite song is one from his new album “Don’t Cry Because It’s Over” and the song is “How It Starts”. In the Spanish side it has always been the band called Morat.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
In my music 100% every song I have published tells a story of what has happened to me in my relationships. In my artistic vision it has influenced me to be that voice that tells others who have or are going through depression that they are not alone, that if i made it out of that dark hole they can too and that there is a community.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? I hope you get a flurry of emotions such as excited, reflective, wanting to jump with
friends. But most important of all is that you are not alone on this journey we call life, that tomorrow is a new day for new expectations, that there is a light at the end of the tunnel you are facing. Everything happens for a reason and you have to be alive to see the outcome.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It may sound cliche but it has taught me to be real with myself. At the end of the day we look to connect with others who have gone through the same experiences.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Dream venue would be at el Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot, know in Puerto Rico as “El Choli”.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? For sure Morat because they have been a great influence in my music and my buddies
in my heartbreak and loving seasons. I think they bring a good example of what I want to get out of her crowd.
