Introduction of the project

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Walking around as a small child making up songs to sing to myself as a game.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I decided I wanted to write songs before I could play an instrument, so as a nine year old or so I started writing lyrics to imagined melodies which I would then compile into imagined albums, complete with hand drawn covers. Then I discovered that the instrument used in the torturous piano lessons my parents were making me do could actually be used for more than arduous classical pieces and was able to put words and music together.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

Permission is an EP of personal songs, recorded live in the studio with a fantastic band. It’s rooted in soul music and is full of wounded feelings set to a snappy beat.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music

before?

Songwriter-y indie pop and soul

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Songwriting only seems hard if you don’t do it regularly, it’s a muscle than needs exercise to stay strong.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Piano, guitar, notepad and pen. During lockdown I bought Ableton and made a partially electronic based album called after this i’m going normal, which was really fun and rewarding to do, but I still only learned the very basics of how to create that way and ever since have gone back to basics. I still get the biggest thrill out of conjuring something out of nothing just with the piano and voice.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Are the band Geese indie? I’m enjoying their record.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

All creative acts are personal and based on the sum of our experiences and influences.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Pleasure.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

If you really listen to music and allow yourself to take in its beauty you can’t help but have empathy towards humanity generally. Music is such an emotive, intangible and wondrous force, if we can make that we can’t be all bad.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Good question! Probably one of the grand European theatres like the Teatro di San Carlo or the Royal Albert Hall.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Madonna in the ‘80s so we could have done an epic music video together.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical

journey?

I’m working on a new project right now which is really rewarding. Can’t tell you much more just yet!

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That they like the music and want more of it?
