Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with THEY TRIED TO BURY US

Brand new band out of Dallas, TX. Debut single “IAMAMI” is out now, everywhere!
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
We all grew up with father’s who played instruments so we were all exposed to music very early on.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I would say from our father’s and family members that played music. And then in school, around 6th grade or so, music was a huge factor in picking friend groups at that time.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
This project started from the ashes of an old band. Everyone but our vocalist was in a band called Down To Friend and that band parted ways with our 4th singer and then Rob took over the singer position for DTF. We started writing new music and felt like it was a completely different band, musically. So we decided to start fresh with a new name and new music.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Mostly, we are a post-hardcore band like Piece The Veil or The Used. But we Shosi mix pop-punk and even indie/alternative rock.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
This past year we have really been diving into drop-tuning our guitars and exploring tunings like Drop A, Drop B and even as low a Drop F.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Definitely lots of guitars, Fender, Gibson, Etc… And lots and lots of amp Sims and plugins. And also a Quad Cortex and Helix Stomp as well.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Listening to a ton of Dayseeker and President lately. And as always, Bilmuri!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
– personal experience deeply influences or songs. We have a whole ep coming out next summer that is mostly about a really bad breakup our singer went through last year and how it affected his whole family dynamic and everything. One of the songs on there was also written on a day when our guitarist grandmother passed away and deals with that as well.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Mostly that, IT GETS BETTER! We all go through tough times in life and things that we think we won’t make it out of alive. But with time, it does get better. Sometimes better than ever.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Not giving up. Sometimes you just pump a song out no problem, sometimes it’s alot of work. It all eventually works out though if you don’t give up.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Warped Tour of course! Or even When We Were Young Festival…
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Johnny Franck of Bilmuri. He’s the G.O.A.T.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)
just search for “They Tried To Bury Us” and we will pop up!
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
We have been taking this project slower than past projects so we are very eager to get our and play some live shows when our debut e.p. drops next summer.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
We just hope they enjoy listening to what we’ve so greatly enjoyed making!
