Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Everyday Outlaw

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I remember being in first grade waiting in the parking lot for my brother and father to come out of a record store where my father had bought my brother a copy of ‘Buddy Holly and the Crickets 20 greatest hits’ my father put it on and it resonated with me instantly. My brother didn’t care for it so I stole the tape from him and played it until it wouldn’t play anymore. Memorizing every word and inflection…I was hooked from that moment on.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Once I was older I got a cheap electric guitar and started hacking out chords. The need to create really began when my Father moved out when I was 15 and I needed somewhere to put my angst and heartbreak.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current LP, ‘Born From the Fire” is generally focused around trying to reconcile how the best gift of one’s life can come from broken love and broken promises. How does one make those contrarian feelings exist in the same space?
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I think the best way to describe our sound is Alt/Outlaw Country with a modern twist.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? I think the one thing that I really lean on with my music is to always be authentic. An
audience can sniff out a fraud…so always write and sing about your real life experiences.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My 1963 Martin OOO-18 is my tool for writing and creation. I also play a Deluxe Tele. We really pride ourselves on recording with vintage gear and stove for the best analog tone possible. Obviously we use protools for post production but no ‘Fake instruments’ are on my record.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
There are so many…Tony Martinez, The Reeves Brothers, Bart Crow and Many more.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Like any artist I spent a large portion of my life self sabotaging with drugs and alcohol. So many broken relationships, arrests, crashes…the list goes on.
I have been clean and sober for 14 years…a large portion of my writing draws from my experience in addiction.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? I would hope through my writing people can relate if they are struggling with similar
demons and also, can draw hope through the cathartic effects of releasing these emotions.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Never give up…ever. Your greatest victory could be just around the corner. At the end of the day, music will always be there to sooth you. Your art cannot be determined by whether other people like it,
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Any Country artist dreams of playing the Ryman
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? I’m not a big collaborator but who wouldn’t want to do a duet with Loretta Lynn?

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My hope for this album is to gain enough traction to tour Europe and play larger Festivals here in the states. Also, to make enough dough from the album to pay for the next project.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? I hope listeners will resonate with my music and seek us out when we play in their locals.
I really enjoy meeting fans and interacting with them whenever I can.
