Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Sisters

sisters

The half American half British band Sisters is a Liverpool based group lead by singer and primary songwriter Jane Kero. The self described ‘dreamy, poetic, weepy rock’ band has traceable influences such as Wolf Alice, PJ Harvey, The Cardigans, and more. Sonically the band has developed a knack for catchy hooks and introspective lyrics, but not at the expense of experimentation.

Despite the band’s age, Sisters has been featured on the social medias of popular local music critics and music magazines that have pushed the band into gaining traction quickly and under very positive light. Formed in 2024 but conceptualized years before, Sisters is making steps and paying their dues around the Northwest UK. The band is looking forward to their future and the release of their most recent endeavors.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Listening to Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys on CD in my mom’s car when I was three.

How did your passion for creating music begin?
When I was born.

What’s the story behind your current music project?
I asked four of my best friends if they wanted to start a band with me called Sisters – which I came up with about a day or two before. The name is a reflection of the sensitive and beautiful relationship I feel with life and with the band, and also with music itself. There is something kind of bitchy and annoying about life and yet these small moments of connection when you listen to music and see a show make it all worth it somehow – at least for me. And it’s kind of the same with Sisters. They can be assholes to each other and still have moments of connection that ultimately make the relationship one of the most important in each other’s lives. There is nothing like having a sister as a young girl, however that also relates to my close friends who are girls who I consider my sisters.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Dance music. It’s always been about dancing. You have to dance.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
The pentatonic scale circa 2015.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Logic, never changing my strings, and a record player.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Geese.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Every single song I write is about something I’ve been through. If it’s not it’s about an emotion I feel so heavily that it almost doesn’t belong in this life so I create a story that is extreme enough for an emotion like the one I feel to exist.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope people are comforted and enraged and sad. I want you to feel like you just got out of therapy when you finish listening, you know?

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That life can be beautiful.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
We’d really love to play the Windmill obviously. I mean we’re set to headline Rough Trade which I’d say is a dream venue for all of us.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Mary in the Junkyard because I think our sounds are really compatible and I’d love to see what kind of instrumentation they would add to our songs.

Where can our listeners follow and support your music?
Fantastic question. You can follow us on Instagram @sistersbandofficial and our website is sistersbandofficial.com.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To take over the whole fucking world.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
Nothing. The point is to discover things about themselves.
