Formula Indie Sessions Interview with ELLIE HARRIS

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I performed a solo piece at age 7 in front of about 300 people in a theatre. I was so nervous but once i started it felt like home and i realised this is something that i needed to do.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I’ve been writing music since i was 9 years old but after being in choir for 3 years age 11-14 it really sparked a deeper urge to create more complex compositions and practise learning more complex scales to level up my melodic and harmonic choices.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I wrote this song about a guy i was inlove with who chose someone else over me after leading me on for years. The tune expresses an exaggeration of how i felt, and wanting revenge. Almost 3 years later he left her after realising his feelings for me never left and only grew stronger. It became a full circle moment because although i no longer felt anger toward the both of them, I chose someone else over him too. Right as he was making himself available to build the relationship i wanted with him for years. Timing eh

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Majorly. I mostly write from my own experiences and the older i got the less innocent my music sounded. As a very young girl i wrote more folk and ballad style which mirrored my innocence at the time. But after many heartbreaks and mental health difficulties my compositions and songwriting definitely reflects that.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I want people to feel seen and understood. They are not alone in many circumstances. I also want people to take philosophical messages from my music as there are often lyrics that reflect a broader perspective on life. Helping someone through a tough time is high on my agenda.
