Formula Indie Session Interview with Michele DeRose MacShane
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music was at the age of three. I grew up in a very theatrical and musical family. My father was a regional theater director and my mother was an accomplished musician.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion for creating music started at the age of six when I took piano lessons for seven years and then the clarinet at the age of ten for seven years.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I am presently working on a song that is centered around current events in the world.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
All of my music is original and unique. It is a blend between both pop and inspirational genres.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I play keyboards/guitar in most of my songs, and I use Audacity for recording/editing my work.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I listen to and appreciate artists of all different genres.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
After I lost my parents 20 days apart from each other in 2019, my life hit an all time low. It was during this time that I started writing music and lyrics, while teaching myself how to play the ukulele that my father bought for me on my birthday a few months before he passed. I also play the guitar that is incorporated in my songs. To say that Songwriting helped heal me during this difficult time is an understatement. I went on to write and record songs that are centered around being thankful and never giving up in life no matter how hard times get.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I would like for my listeners to never give up on their dreams. Believe in your vision and always take small steps. And never, EVER let anyone discourage or put you down for what you believe in.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
If I could collaborate with any one artist, it would be with the great Joni Mitchell. Since I was a kid, I loved her powerful storytelling and poetic words. My favorite childhood songs were Both Sides Now and Big Yellow Taxi.

14. Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My goal is to get my music into Sync Licensing in TV/Film/Commercials and all other visual media.
