Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Lost Weekend
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Seeing the cover of John Lennon’s Rock ‘n’ Roll very early on. I loved that album.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started on violin and piano as a kid, but everything changed when I picked up the guitar at 13. After discovering AC/DC, among others, I was obsessed.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Lost Weekend is my solo rock project, based in Stockholm. I write, record, and play the instruments myself. The one-man approach comes from Dave Grohl recording the first Foo Fighters album alone — I got that record from my grandmother when I was 13, and years later it shaped how I wanted to work. Most of it happens in my home studio, with some recording at Omnivox in Borlänge and mixing currently at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, the same studio where that Foo Fighters album was made.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Guitar-driven rock with a darker, industrial edge. If you know Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nine Inch Nails, you’re in the right neighbourhood. The guitar side leans on players like John Norum, Michael Schenker, Joe Bonamassa, and Eric Steckel. Riffs and melody carry the songs, and I keep it personal and direct rather than over-polished.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
That I could do the whole thing myself — write, play, and record every part — instead of waiting for a band to come together. I’d been in bands for a long time and wanted that, but learning Grohl had done exactly this on his own opened the door. Lenny Kravitz was an influence in the same way. Once I stopped waiting, the music started moving.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My white Gibson Les Paul Custom — Randy Rhoads was the inspiration there — sits at the centre. Pro Tools is where everything gets built. At home I track through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and monitor on Genelec speakers, with the electric guitar as the core of most songs. Beyond that the setup is minimal. The parts and the writing matter more than the gear list.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Midland.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
A lot. I work through emotions by playing and writing — that’s where most of it goes.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Energy, joy, nostalgia, vivid imagery — and a way to channel their own emotions.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That it’s who I am. It’s a part of me no matter what else I do in life.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Coachella, Roskilde Festival, and Gröna Lund.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
John Norum — his solos are my favourite. Josh Homme and Dave Grohl would be great too.
