Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Nia John
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Singing along to my father playing yellow submarine by the Beatles on guitar.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Listening to my older brother’s music and his band play made me want to enter the industry as a singer. I had a recording studio experiece as a Birthday present in 2012 and loved it. I started recorded regulary cover songs then eventually started writing my own material and released my own original album last year.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I’ve recently released ‘Lost in France’ a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s first big hit. This was before her passing, which makes it all that more special to honour her. My first Bonnie Tyler release ‘Total Eclipse’ went Worldwide on radio to over a million listeners in 2021. My 2nd Bonnie Tyler release in the same year ‘Holding Out For a Hero’ was chosen by an Italian Games Producer Daniele Spadoni as soundtrack for his retro game trailer. My 3rd release, ‘Faster Than The Speed of Night’ reached no’ 41 in the Euro Indie Charts, and had Worldwide radio play. Whilst I was out gigging with my band in Skewen, S-Wales, in 2025, I met her nephew and he asked if I had done ‘Lost in France’ yet, which I hadn’t, so I decided that would be my next Bonnie Tyler release.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Rock. I have a rock husky voice, my roots are in rock. I do sing some pop songs but you’ll notice I tend to rock them up a bit, especially with my band.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Don’t be afraid to try and do things yourself. I learnt on the Audacity audio editing app along with my keyboard, which saved time and expense utilising other people.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Audacity audio editing app, keyboard, bass, condensor mic and computer.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Apart from my own, I like a mix of all of them. I listen to different countries music as I think that is fair for everyone.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I think it is more your opinions, values and attitudes that leak into your music. For example, how you feel about World peace and war, how you feel about inequality, discrimination, crime, etc. I tend to keep my personal experiences private.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope they feel a sense of righteousness, that good will overcome evil and wrongdoings. Overall I hope they enjoy listening and iterpret it in their own way.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
The good times outweigh the bad, and make all the hard work worth it. That it is an undervalued skilled profession whereby musicians should be paid more.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Bonnie Tyler and Lzzy Hale are female rock icons so I would love to have performed with them.

My dream for what’s next would be to appear on tv singing.
