Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Brook Lynn
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music was searching on YouTube as a kid and coming across Aretha Franklin. I was completely blown away by the power of her voice. I had never heard someone sing with so much emotion and strength before, and I remember sitting there with my mouth wide open, so impressed by her. She was one of the first artists who made me fall in love with singing.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I’ve always loved singing, but for a long time I never thought it was something I could actually pursue because anxiety was holding me back. As I slowly started taking steps to overcome that fear, I began writing my own songs, recording them, and hearing my ideas come to life. The more I created, the more my passion grew. I started dreaming bigger, and that feeling has only become stronger. Today, creating music is still one of the things I love most.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I’ve been working on music that reflects different chapters of my life, especially the journey of living with anxiety, learning to overcome fear, and finding my own voice. I want every song to feel honest and meaningful. My goal is for people to not only enjoy the music, but to feel understood when they listen to it.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I would describe my sound as alternative pop with a strong love for emotional ballads. A lot of my music has a slightly darker atmosphere, but there’s almost always hope underneath it. I love combining powerful vocals with honest storytelling.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I’ve learned that authenticity is everything. The moment you start making music based on what you think other people want to hear, you lose a part of yourself. The songs that connect the most are always the ones that come from a real place. Staying true to who you are will always translate better than trying to fit into someone else’s expectations.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
A piano is definitely my most important instrument. Sometimes I write on guitar, but I naturally gravitate towards the piano because that’s where melodies come to me the easiest. I record and sketch my ideas in FL Studio, where I often loop and edit piano or guitar parts while I’m writing.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’ve been listening to NF for over a decade, and he’s still one of my favorite artists that I still listen to today. What I admire most is how honest and vulnerable he is in his music. His storytelling feels incredibly real, and he’s never afraid to explore the darker, more difficult parts of life in a level of detail that very few artists are willing to. That kind of raw honesty is something I really respect.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My personal experiences are the foundation of everything I write. I believe the best music comes from being completely honest and vulnerable. A lot of people struggle to put their feelings into words, and music can sometimes say what they can’t. If someone hears one of my songs and finally feels understood, then it has already done its job.
As time goes on, I want to become even more open about my own life and experiences, because I know how powerful it can be when someone realizes they’re not alone.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope my music gives people space to process whatever they’re going through. Sometimes we need to sit with sadness before we can move forward. At the same time, I always want there to be hope.
I talk a lot about anxiety because it’s something so many people experience. I want people to see that anxiety and chasing your dreams can exist at the same time. Anxiety doesn’t have to control your life. You can still choose to move forward despite it. If my story inspires even one person to step outside their comfort zone, then that’s incredibly meaningful to me.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has taught me to trust my own instincts. Everyone will have an opinion about what you should create, but at the end of the day you’re the one who has to stand behind it. I’ve learned that asking too many people for approval can sometimes kill your creativity.
If you genuinely believe in an idea, follow that feeling. Even if it doesn’t become a huge success, at least you’ve created something that truly represents who you are.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Coachella has always been a dream of mine. I grew up hearing about it, and it has always looked so magical. I’ve never even been there as a visitor, so performing there one day would be an unforgettable experience.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d probably choose Aretha Franklin or Christina Aguilera. Both of them have voices that completely blow me away, and I think performing with either of them would be incredibly exciting. I often sing emotional songs, but I think a duet with one of them would bring out another side of me one that’s full of soul, joy, and energy.
I’d also love to collaborate with NF. Not only has his music helped me through a lot personally, but I also feel like the message behind his music aligns with what I’m trying to create. He’s never been afraid to be raw, honest, and vulnerable, and that’s something I deeply admire. He’s definitely inspired me to open up in my own songwriting. I think a collaboration between us could be really powerful, especially from a male and female perspective on topics like mental health, fear, and personal growth.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I hope America’s Got Talent gives me the opportunity to introduce more people to my original music. Right now many people know me as a cover artist, but writing my own songs has always been my biggest passion.
We’ve been working on original music for a long time, and I honestly can’t wait to finally share that side of myself. My dream is to release a lot more originals, perform around the world, and eventually go on tour.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I hope people see that I’m someone who’s very grounded and genuinely doing this for the right reasons. it’s always been about connecting with people.
Sometimes it truly feels like this is what I’m meant to do. If my music can bring even a little bit of peace, hope, or comfort to someone who needs it, then I’ve accomplished something meaningful. Reading messages from people who tell me my music has helped them is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
