Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Gioele Manè

Hi everyone, my name is Gioele Mané, and I’m an independent singer-songwriter from the province of Rome. I’m a huge fan of singer-songwriters—both American and otherwise— who, often armed with nothing but a simple guitar, have sparked real revolutions over the years. In my own small way, I draw inspiration from that approach to making music—a style that has given me so much emotion and insight.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
It is certainly linked to my parents, who passed on their passion for singing to me. There was always a radio playing at home, and one of us would be singing along. That’s how I discovered and fell in love with so many Italian singer-songwriters. The song I always used to ask my father to play was “Mistero” by Enrico Ruggeri—and I was only about three years old at the time!
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It was a slow journey for me. I started playing the guitar at 14, and shortly after that, I began writing my first songs. For the next ten years, I wrote songs that didn’t really represent me— they were a bit too… pretentious. Still, I suppose it served as a lesson in figuring out who I wanted to be, both artistically and personally.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My latest single, “Fra le Dolomiti,” tells a very intimate family story. Writing it was like finding myself in events from long ago—events that, in part, have shaped who I am today. This song strongly reflects a journey of exploration—both personal and artistic—that I have undertaken in recent years.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It is a sound with an old-world feel, through which I want to recreate an essential connection with music. In a world where—even for me—it is becoming increasingly difficult to pause and listen, playing with this approach restores a deep connection with myself, and I hope that resonates with others as well.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Many years ago, I used to tell stories without truly understanding them or feeling a genuine connection. Over the years, I learned that to tell a story, you first have to immerse yourself in it—for better or worse. Aspects of the singer’s own life must be deeply intertwined with the story being told; only then, perhaps, can you turn it into a song. That is the most important lesson I have ever learned. When I finally understood this aspect, the way I write changed completely.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Simply my acoustic guitar and my voice. For me, the rest comes only later.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Dutty Beagle, a great singer-songwriter from Cilento. Go give him a listen!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
They have always played an important role. My music has become a tool for exorcising and celebrating specific events in my journey, and my artistic vision has become clearer—because if singing about certain things can be good for me, perhaps it can also help those who want to listen.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope to convey positive emotions and hope, even when speaking about the darkest moments that are part of everyone’s life.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It taught me the power of empathy. In a world where it is often hard to find, music conveyed its value to me.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
There are too many to list! I would like to perform a few more concerts in Rome’s independent theaters, just as I have done recently. And playing at the Brancaccino would be a dream… who knows!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Dreaming big? I’d say Edoardo Bennato, because he tells his stories with a unique magic and has always been a huge inspiration to me.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To reach as many people as possible with my songs, creating a genuine—not virtual—connection. Building that kind of exchange with them would be a dream come true.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? that I am simply a guy who expresses his emotions through singing.
