Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Virya

Hi, we are Virya, a modern metalcore band from Wrocław, Poland.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I remember my dad playing gitar, allowing me to also strum along as a very little boy. I’d be like 1.5 year. I don’t remember ot though, it’s just a photo. I remember getting into stuff he played. I listened carefully, then learnt to play it from the ear.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
By being close to the music since early days. It just stuck with you and can’t get away. Thinking about making own music borns after doing a few covers. Then you have all of these ‘what if’ questions.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Virya was born in 2022, we were pretty disappointed with our current projects and wanted to do a high quality stuff with a good Regime. We’ve met, set a plan, figured out the goals and found out na appropriate name. Virya means a force to do stuff, a positive Energy and we needed just that in that moment.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Surprisingly pro and clear for a small band. Many bands sound dull and muddy when playing live, we took a lot of effort to actually sound great live. Even thought we think, our album sounds really great, we got a lot of praise that we sound even better live.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Home recording ourselves. This is a game changer in terms of attitude, pro approach, and understanding the way music is done. There’s no magic, it’s a careful process of planning and execution. There’s of course the creative stage of composing songs, but it’s nothing without great production and a good methodology.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
We use a lot of samples of various ethnic instruments, it’s great for inspiration, even in modern metal area. We also use a ton of usual software, and of course a midi keyboard. Other than that, we record drums in our own studio on Audix microphones, vocals on SM7B and Neuman TLM 102 and od course we use a few guitars, basses to record stems. We use Quad Cortex and Line 6 Helix to achieve great tone.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
We still love classic indie artists the most – Oasis, Radiohead and Pavement to name a few. We love emotional weight this genre carries.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
We’d sat it’s typical – all artists are heavily driven by personal experiences. Our Echoes Of The Modern Mind is solely focused on emotions and troubles of modern day people. It’s a mirror of the recent times, fears, hope, near future. We live in incredibly dynamic times where progress and changes often outspeed our perception. There’s always a fear, whether we maintain our humanity, especially now, when AI generated music becomes more popular than human-made music. It’s slowly becoming a mainstream, whixh brings us to the point, where being authentic human musician is of great value.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Despite our previous statements, we are a positive bunch. We believe in people and our potential, music was always a letter that one soul sends to another soul. We tell you that no matter the situation, you decide where you go and you can always choose to go forward. That’s what matters, not the position you’re in, but the direction you’re aiming for.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That there’s no point in giving up. In our darkest, it carries us on. At rock bottom, there’s only one direction – up, and that’s what Virya is – the energy that will elevate you up, sometimes with a strong kick in the butt.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Pretty much any middle/big one in Europe or US. We’re still relatively small and unrecognized band that’s yet to make it’s name.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Probably Pink Floyd due to their immense imagination. Totally different world, but that’d be very exciting.
