Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Mama Radical

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I was about two years old and my father was practicing accordion. I didn’t really care much about that, I was anxiously waiting for my turn to sing. Of course I wouldn’t remember this without a proof of C-tape. Finally my dad is done with his rehearsing and I get to the mic. “What shall I sing now…what shall I sing now?” I’m asking with a heavy dialect. Then recording stops and some sound effects of my dads film projects starts. I don’t know if I sang and what.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It probably started at my mothers womb. Since I was little, I had been writing, singing and dancing, so it was natural to start writing music.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I’m writing new songs all the time. Lately more in Finnish, my native language. I’ve been playing alone without a band for a way too long, so this year I’ll start making more efforts to collaborate with people and make live shows besides releasing new music frequently.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It’s difficult to answer. Other people tend to word it better than me. I’ve always listened to many kind of music and my own music is influenced by many different genres.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Maybe that I don’t give a flying f about music theory but I’ve been practicing a lot, meaning just doing it. Just singing, just playing, just creating. You are always learning! It is true that the process is more important than the result. Listen to your own vision. Listen to other peoples opinions keeping in mind that everyone has their own unique way of viewing things.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My mind and my body. I’m exploring instruments and sounds, rhythm and words. Nature is my inspiration. Human nature as well. My voice and a guitar in a main focus but drumming, bass and keyboards are on my list too.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I discovered “The Loving Paupers” about a year or two ago. Fantastic band. There’s so much good music out there and different ways to find it. I don’t listen music very often anymore, but when I do, I really enjoy it! And live music gigs are my favorite!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Well, it’s quite direct. I translate my feelings and experiences into music. You have to be very tenacious if you are an artist. I think artistry is not really something that you choose. You are chosen.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
My message is often to believe in oneself and to find hope and humanity. We all are connected. Part of something greater. And we all go through struggles, It’s part of life. It is possible to grow and learn from those tough experiences.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Joy in creating and learning. Connecting with people. Connecting to higher knowledge and energy.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Somewhere without a hailstorm.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Morcheeba, The Loving Paupers or Johnny Depp and definitely David Bowie

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Playing live gigs, make a vinyl release and enjoy this journey.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
It’s really not so much about me anymore once it’s out there, but more about the viewer or listener. So, like I’m discovering myself, I hope the same for everyone, to become more like who you are.
