Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with vazzè

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My dad used to be in a local band when he was younger so when I was a kid instruments were always laying around the house. I guess that, in a way, I have always been connected to music. I remember listening to various records during road trips, he is a huge KISS fan! If I had to pick a specific memory, I’d say road trips and blasting the KISS MTV unplugged CD on stereo. Goated.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started playing the drums when I was 11 years old, and at 16 I picked up the guitar with the intention of learning just about enough to write some original material. Since then, I’ve pretty much never stopped.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
For my debut EP, “in my garden”, it took many springs before I could finally see it fully bloom. During the pandemic, I began writing the first songs without knowing that they would eventually become part of an EP. Five years later, after numerous rearrangements, my emo side took over and came into shape in a genre I like to describe as emo/folk.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
“A quiet harvest of songs that will make you want to feel earth underneath your fingernails”
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Limit yourself. This is something I learnt over time, recording on analog tape. When you only have 8 tracks to make a song, that’s when you start to get really creative, because you truly realise that every single thing you do has an impact.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
For my ep “in my garden”, analog tape was a necessity. Then, I’d say the drums (of course), guitar and some dusty keyboards. When it comes to the writing process, every single song is written by just me and my guitar.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’m listening to a lot of Italian indie music right now and there’s an artist that I’ve been really captivated by lately, he’s called faccianuvola. His debut album is genuinely so good!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
In every possible way I guess haha. I try to encapsulate moments in my music as much as I can, just so I can look back and say: “This was me x time ago, and that is fine”. It doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be vulnerable. Also, you can imagine that writing these songs over five years ago… well I mean, things have changed. I originally planned to make a cinematic / electronic ep. Yeah. I know.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
“In my garden” is about perspectives. Try to take your time to really understand other people’s point of view. There’s a song I really cherish from Mayday Parade that reflects perfectly what I’m trying to express: “everybody’s got a reason why, if we could only just get it right”.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Be present and in the moment. If you record something, make it as “you in that specific period” as possible. The right people will relate.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Ahh there’s too many! To be honest, I adore much much smaller venues, where you can really feel the presence of people. Probably something really niche like banquet records or something along those lines, I think that would be insanely cool.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
My dream collab is with Zac Farro. Honestly, that man means so much to me. I don’t know him personally (yet) but he is the reason I picked the drumsticks back up when I was a kid going through his dark teenage years. There was a period when I stopped playing and listening to music altogether, and blasting paramore songs on the drums was the fuel that restarted it all. Who knows what will happen in the future, I guess one can only hope.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
As of right now, I’m listening to a lot of Italian music and enjoying shows around the city. I’m trying to be more present in the scene, which, as crazy as it may seem, is a thing I haven’t really ever done properly. I do have some things I will share in the future, but for now I’m just living the thing.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That it’s okay to take all the time you need to do things that fit you. Just value what makes you you. I’m an introverted individual but I really thrive on other people’s point of view. If you vibe with what I do and stumble upon my music, shoot me a DM on ig!
