Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with 3ismore

Interview with Dieter Depraetere, guitarist of the band 3IsMore
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Reply
Dieter (guitars): Even as a child I always loved music. I listened to records of my mam and dad. The first record I bought myself was ‘One for the road’ a double live album from The Kinks. It blew me of my sockets at that time and it still does. Especially the guitar sound and riffs of Dave Davies. I was about 10. And from there I kept on buying records whenever I could afford it.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
Reply
Dieter (guitars): As a kid I always played air guitar and conducted imagenary orchestra’s. When i picked up an instrument, like a flute, I had the impression I could play it and improvise on it. But it took me until my 30’s until I really picked up an instrument to learn to play it. First it was the drum and later the guitar 😊
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Reply
Dieter (guitars): I guess it was about 15 years ago, I started looking for some people to form a band and play music together. I placed an announcement on internet and Jan & Tiny reacted on it. We first started out playing some covers but later we found it more amusing to create and record our own music. And we still do.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Reply
I guess you could call it Indy Pop. We just create in the moment and come up with music we like to play and hear.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Reply
We strugled a bit in the early days finding a kind of template or system we could use to create our music. Should we start from some chords, or from a melody line or something else? Now we have found a way of doing things. The process is quite clear for us and we manage to create new songs quite easily. We’ve found out that starting from a text was the most easy for us. Tiny would then hear a singing line in her head and Jan and I would then come up with the chords and the structure of the song.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Reply
We always create our music starting with one guitar and a voice. When we have the skelleton of the song, we record it and play a lot of different tracks on guitar and bass. Sometimes we add some piano. And we add vocals in layers.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Reply
Dieter (guitars): There’s not just ons song that pops up. I’m a serial song and music lover 😊
Personally i like to listen to blues, jazz, pop, rock, folk… you name it. I’m a huge fan of groups like Elbow, Editors, King King, dEUS, Novastar, Triggerfinger, Pink Floyd,Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fink, John Mayer, Fischer-Z,… You can see it’s very eclectic.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
