Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with M4RIN

DSC00080-test

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I think I always had music around me.
I grew up until my 8 years old in a family house where my uncle was playing in a rock band, we was going to see him in concert, and there was a big piano in the house too.

I also remember with my dad we was doing full album listening sessions, staying in the living room and breaking down tracks together. My dad was always connected to the music industry, he was organizing events on his personal time, so music was really part of everyday life.

Around my 12 years old I had the chance to be trained in a hip hop studio in La Rochelle.
I learned scratch with DJ Virus, I was with the engineer during record sessions, and with rappers during their writing sessions. Being inside this environment at this age really pushed me to go deeper.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

It started with experimentation.
I didn’t plan to be a musician at first, I just wanted to understand how sounds work together.
With time curiosity turned into obsession, and music became my main way to express ideas and emotions.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Less is more, trust me.
Once I understood that space is as important as sound, my productions became stronger, clearer, and more powerful on the dancefloor.
But I’m always falling back into my bad habits of creativity ahaha.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Right now if you follow my Spotify playlist, you can find a lot of tracks from Disclosure or Notion, insane UK vibes.
I always respected Flume’s work, especially around his sound design.
These days I also really like the work of AVAION.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

I work with Ableton for more than 11 years now, and I built my production process around it.
For bass and mid parts, synths and leads, I usually use Serum or Cyclop.
i work a ton with the fab filter suite too
For granularity and more natural instruments I work with Kontakt, for me it’s a perfect combo.
I also use a lot of homemade racks in Ableton.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Life experiences shape everything.
Traveling, playing in clubs, meeting different cultures and making new friends around the world, all of that influences my sound.
My music reflects movement, change, and emotional contrast.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

For Europe, like many electronic artists, Tomorrowland or Dour Festival, the energy there is just crazy.
In the USA I would love to play at Red Rocks.
Events like Art Basel, EDC or Electric Forest look very fun too ahaha.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

This question is not easy.
I would like to work with a lot of artists, collaboration is really important for my project now, especially with social apps we can work with musicians from everywhere.

But yeah, I’m French, I love French house, so Daft Punk sounds like a correct answer ahaha.
At the same time I really respect Hugel, his sound design and his work ethic are very inspiring.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

To keep evolving without losing authenticity.
Releasing honest music, playing meaningful shows, and connecting with people through frequency and gigs.
I’m building my own label with friends right now, working on a live and DJ set, I have some new tracks almost ready and I’m already working on the next ones.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That my music comes from a real place.
It’s not about trends, it’s about emotion, friends, family, movement, and sharing moments together.
