Formula Indie Sessions Interview with Simone Maria Navarra

copertina 1

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Probably playing my parents’ records using a small portable record player, more than 40 years ago.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I always looked for a way to express my creativity: I used to write narrative and I love photography. A few years ago I installed my first DAW and it just felt natural to try and write some songs.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

The idea of my music, at least at the moment, is an Ironic, energic and at times romantic descriprion of the world we live in.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Mix 80’s 90’s ans 2000’s rock music with italian classic songwriting and you get an idea.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

A great italian songwriter (Saverio Grandi) taught me that the music compisition itself can “tell” what you are trying to express with your words. And once you get this idea it changes everything.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

I use an electric guitar connected to a DAW and have a few plugins for keyborards, guitar sounds an drums. Once the demo is finished I have the drums recorded by a session musician and go to a studio to record my voice.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

I listent to all kind of music and ther is not something I particoluar that I listen to regoularly. If I have to think about an indie group that caught my attention recently I’d say “Vintage Violence”, “Diplomatico e il collettivo Ninco Nanco” (yeah that’s the name!) and “Matrioska”

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Well of course I am 50 years old and all my music and ideas are “filtered” by the fact that usually rock musicians and songwriters start their career at a much younger age. Probably I am a bit more didillusioned but also I don’t give everything all that importance anymore.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope that people will stop fearing if not being actually terrified by the possibility of failure and will start chasing their dreams… even if they are not that young anymore like me.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

You can do everything by yourself, but you cannot do everything alone.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I am not the type of guy who would love an huge audience in a large venue. I’d love to play on a small stage in a public square, in front of people that just want to enjoy music and that might discover my songs that way.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I’d love to work with other italian songwriters. Vasco Rossi, Ligabue, Bennato, Jovanotti, Caparezza… there is so many of them and they are all great!

Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

You can find all my music on Spotify:

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

The “dream” at the moment is just growing a small audience of people that like my music. And of course to always write better songs.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I hope they’ll find out that my music makes them feel good. That’s all a songwriter could hope for.
