Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with MEERSEIN

How would you briefly introduce your music project?
MEERSEIN is more than just a music project to me – it’s a world I’ve created where I can fully express myself and let my emotions run free. Musically, it lives somewhere between synth-pop and dark wave, blending the spirit of the 1980s with a modern sound aesthetic. It’s a space where nostalgia and the present meet, and where I feel completely at home.
- What is your earliest memory connected to music?
It’s hard to pinpoint a single first memory, because so many of them are tied to my family. I remember driving in the car with my father, listening to the music he loved and introducing me to his musical world – a world that still shapes me today. There were also weekly music evenings with my parents and my sister, little rituals that marked the beginning of the weekend. And I vividly remember the day my father came home from work, proudly holding up a newly bought Sex Pistols CD. All of these moments were deeply formative for me.
- How did your passion for creating music begin?
It started with listening to music and was later reinforced through early musical education. I had the chance to attend a program where children are introduced to all the instruments of a music school before choosing one to learn properly. For me, that instrument was the guitar – and that’s where my own musical journey really began. - What’s the story behind your current music project?
As a teenager, I experimented with many different musical styles, but I had always been drawn to this particular kind of sound. Even though I listened to a lot of genre-related music, I couldn’t quite find my way into writing it myself for a long time. That changed after I had been running MEERSEIN Radio for about one or two years – a radio show I host and produce, focusing on synth-pop, dark wave, new wave, EBM, industrial, and related genres. At some point, something clicked, and I wrote my first song, “Speechless.” That moment marked the true beginning of MEERSEIN as an original music project. - How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?I don’t really like thinking in strict categories, because that would limit my creative freedom. That’s one of the most beautiful things about being independent – I don’t have a label telling me what to do. I write what I feel. Because of that, my music is quite versatile. If I had to describe it broadly, I’d place it somewhere between synth-pop and dark wave. You can hear the influence of my childhood and the 1980s music I discovered through my parents, combined with many modern elements. In a way, it’s what the ’80s might sound like if they were happening today.
- What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? For a long time, I was hoping for a big breakthrough and did everything in my power to make it happen. At some point, I realized that there are more important things in life, and that overthinking can drain the joy out of your own project. If a breakthrough happens one day, it will happen. Right now, I’m grateful for what I have and what I’ve already achieved – especially for the fact that I’m producing my first EP, which will be released in April 2026.
- What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? My songwriting process is probably not very romantic. I work with a notation program called Guitar Pro and write notes instead of recording parts directly. You can listen back to the compositions in the software, but it sounds pretty strange – you really need to know the sound in your head to imagine the final result. After that, I move everything into FL Studio and work together with sound engineers who help me translate the sounds I imagine into something tangible.
- Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Right now, I’m listening to the live album Black Symphony by Within Temptation on repeat. I love their music, and combined with a full orchestra it becomes absolutely epic. - How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
MEERSEIN is more “me” than any of my previous projects. Even though it’s often expressed in a cryptic way, I process a lot of my personal life through this project. I feel completely free in my creative process, while still drawing on the knowledge and experience I’ve gained from earlier projects and musical experiments. - What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Everyone experiences music differently. It’s not important to me to dictate what people should feel – that would be too authoritarian, and that’s not how music works. What matters to me is that I reach people emotionally and take them into my world, whatever that world looks like for each individual. Everyone carries their own baggage, their own experiences and paths, and those shape the emotions they feel when listening to my lyrics. If my music didn’t evoke any emotion at all, I would feel like I had done something wrong. - What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
To keep going, to persevere, and at the same time not be too impatient. - What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
I would love to play in a castle or a historic venue, maybe in an epic ballroom setting. When it comes to festivals, it’s clearly M’era Luna in Germany. That’s partly because I have so many memories connected to it and have met many people there over the years. It feels a bit like coming home.
And a special shout-out to my father – we always visited the festival together. - If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Robert Smith from The Cure. He’s a hero of my childhood, and I imagine working with him would be very relaxed and genuine. He has remained grounded, and musically he’s one of my biggest influences. - Where can our listeners follow and support your music?

- Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My dream arrives on April 10th, 2026 – the release of my first MEERSEIN EP, a project I’ve worked on for a long time. I’m really looking forward to the moment when I’ll finally be able to hold it in my hands. - What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That I truly enjoy what I’m doing, that it’s not fake or calculated – it comes straight from my soul.
