Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Lunavela

Hi, Steve here from Lunavela
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My older brother buying me a C.D of Sly and The Family Stone for Christmas. I hated funk back then. I asked for a My Bloody Valentine or Smashing Pumpkins C.D. The C.D ended up in his room. Typical teenage brother stuff. My brother was always playing music on vinyl, and I credit him for getting me into music, as nobody in my family is particularly musical.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
When I was a teenager, I begged my friends to play bass in their band. They needed a bass player, so they tolerated my wallflower root note basslines, and then I was hooked.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
Lunavela is just me. I miss playing with other people, but I guess I just prefer doing everything. Even though it can be quite exhausting sometimes.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Observational style songs about daily life, and at times orchestral and ambient.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music? You don’t need a record label or a manager.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? Logic Pro, Midi Controller and guitar. Unfortunately, I don’t have a guitar with me. I have
a nice Japanese acoustic guitar, but it’s back in New Zealand. I live in Asia.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
New Jeans, Brian Eno, Real Lies and Washed Out.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision? Good question. Um, I try my best to sing about life, and to be as honest as possible. I’m
not sure that people always like the truth.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work? I hope my music gives people relief from the grind of life, or that they can relate to it.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Don’t rely on anybody to get stuff done. Nobody really knows what they are doing; figure it out as you go. Also, strangers are more supportive than friends and family.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Glastonbury.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why? The Chemical Brothers.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links) https://www.youtube.com/@lunavela6708
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
Maybe to find somebody that I enjoy collaborating with.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way? I hope that whatever people are overthinking or going through, my music brings some
therapy or relief from that.
