Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview BRVMAS

brvmastrentoa22

BRVMAS is a project led by Uruguayan musician Mau Fabian, performed in Portuguese and shaped during his time in Brazil. What began as a band gradually evolved into a solo project.
Rooted in indie rock, post-punk, and shoegaze, BRVMAS builds moody, immersive atmospheres through layered guitars and quiet melancholy.
The 2022 single “Trento” features lead guitar work by Mexican–Swiss artist Sun Dera.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

My earliest memories are of sitting on the living room carpet at home, surrounded by my parents’ cassette tapes, completely fascinated by the album covers.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

It started when I moved to Brazil at the age of 14 and became friends with kids my age who already had a band. I learned to play bass with them, and years later, after hearing “Reptilia” by The Strokes, I felt an almost absurd urge to start composing my own music..

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I had already been part of a few musical projects rooted in classic rock, grunge, and shoegaze, but I felt the need to create something that blended atmosphere with melancholic vocals and the kind of post-punk sadness you hear in Joy Division, while still being somehow danceable within that melancholy.

At the end of 2020, I shared this idea with Gabe Milioli and Guilherme Cordeiro. Together we released our first single, “Morfina,” followed by “Benquista,” this last one created remotely after I returned to Uruguay. In 2022, the project became a personal endeavor, where I compose and record all the instruments myself, except for drums.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I’d say it’s music for melancholic people who want to dance.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

I learned a lot from Sonic Youth in terms of exploring sound and texture, but I would especially highlight bossa nova for its beautiful and nostalgic chords (which I shamelessly borrow quite often when writing my songs).

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

An acoustic guitar and my semi-hollow Telecaster, along with a few reverb and delay pedals.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

There’s this Brazilian artist named Fernando Motta. I think he deserves much more attention than he’s currently getting.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I was raised watching videotapes filled with music videos from MTV. I think the visual and musical aesthetics of 90s alternative culture became the foundation of my artistic identity.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope they can find beauty in melancholy.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That it’s possible to connect emotions with complete strangers through music and build real bonds from that connection.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I’d love to play at one of the editions of Lollapalooza.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Definitely Julian Casablancas. I love what he does with The Voidz, his experimentation and the maturity of his lyrics.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

My dream is that one day what I create can influence a band that becomes huge. I’d rather leave the spotlight to others

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I’m not sure I expect them to discover something about me personally, but I do hope they can connect with what I’m trying to express
