Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with The Summer Fruits

unnamed (17)

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

That is really hard question as we have always been surrounded by music and music making.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

We formed The Summer Fruits in 2020 when Alex and Peter met whilst studying on a degree course in Music Performance at Nottingham Trent University, and where they learnt their way around a recording studio.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

Our first single, a simple ballad with piano accompaniment, was titled ‘It’s Because’. Since then we have been working to identify the genre that is the best fit for our songs and developing a distinctive sound.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

We have been described as a combination of Acoustic Folk and Indie Pop and that is probably a good description of what we are.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Don’t try to compete with the record label artists with big production but concentrate where you feel most comfortable and what brings you most joy.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

We use a free DAW (digital audio workstation) for our work, previously called Cakewalk it is now called the free version of Sonor. It allows everything we need for our production. Our songs extensively use ukuleles and layered vocal with the occasional guitar and small percussion.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Dodie

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Our songs try to draw on everyday observations of people and our own experiences.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Our songs try to bring positive messages based on life experiences and observations.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Try to understand how other poeple are feeling when they are going through lifes challenges and bring this to your songwriting.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Abbey Road studio has been the beating heart of the British music industry for more than 60 years so to record there would be a dream come true. For a live venue it would have to be Glastonbury.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

If Elvis Presley sang a train timetable or take away menu it would sound fantastic and what an honour for any songwriter for him to sing one of your songs, so it would have to be Elvis.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

What most songwriters want is for their songs to be listen to and liked, even better loved. The dream is for this.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

We do not have a commercial sound but aim to bring positive messages through our songs.
