Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Springworks

ab67616100005174c53e56dae38c53834faf8235

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Listening to the Beatles red and blue double album lp’s with the big headphone cans on my dad’s stereo

How did your passion for creating music begin?

Around the time first really listening to depeche mode

What’s the story behind your current music project?

We are always at work on our next song, and are planning on releasing an album soon with some new songs along with some of our past favourites

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

A bit retro, harmonious, and each song uniquely its own

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

To always be recording. Even into the phone recorder to come back to later when an idea comes.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Cubase, GarageBand and various guitars, synths and mics

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

The top 3 songs right now on our Indie Songs We Love Playlist are My Character was Killed Off in a Fiery Carwreck by The Ekphrastics, SPLAT! By The DreamWorks and Ways to Kill an Animal by Zero Years. There are too many to mention, which is almost the best thing to come from finding ourselves in such great humbling company.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

It’s often, but not always, looking back on lyrics later that it seems they are much more particular to personal experience than first realized. And listening to great songs by others is inspirational when they hit that special spot

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Any song that makes an impression on anyone for any reason is an absolute joy to hear about. And if a song is somehow relatable to someone it’s just a feeling that is outside of the ordinary and wonderfully difficult to describe. I do think there might be a retro nostalgiac overall idea

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

The whole exceeds the parts that go into it

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Let’s say Wembley

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

The Trashcan Sinatras or Matt Johnson of The The. Or Dave Couse of Ahouse. Or Dave Trumfio of The Pulsars. They Might Be Giants. All singularly at the top of the many we love. These folks though have been some of the biggest influences where the similarities can sometimes come through in some of ours. Would love to collaborate with Dave Hemingway of The Beautiful South. A huge influence, him and the band. I once had the opportunity to get stumbling drunk with him after one of their shows and it was surreally fantastic. It’s been too long since hearing him.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

More songs and hope as many people hear us as possible and hopefully make a few people’s favourite song for a bit.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

To never know what to expect from one song to the next while they still sound familiar
