Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Alyssa Marie Coon

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory is singing The Wizard of Oz in the car with my parents. I loved the music in that movie — it was the first time I felt connected to a song.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
It started when I began taking classical piano lessons. That opened up my musical ear and made me fall in love with the idea of creating. From there, I wanted to take vocal lessons and keep exploring more.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I love writing and producing my own music because it inspires me and lets me express exactly how I feel. This project is about turning real moments and emotions into songs people can connect with.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I’d describe it as alt-country with elements of pop, rock, and indie.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
To open my ears and feel. Music is all about emotion — when you stop overthinking and actually feel it, the song comes out so much more honest.
What tools, instruments, or DAWs do you use?
It varies depending on my flow that day, but I always come back to my guitars, pianos, and my go-to plugins. Those are essential for me no matter what I’m working on.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’m loving Joshua Slone’s new album.
What messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope people feel understood — like the things they’re going through aren’t just theirs alone. If a song of mine can make someone feel seen or comforted, that means everything to me.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That growth takes time, and that every phase — can become something beautiful. Music taught me patience and to trust the process.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at? I would absolutely love to play at the Opry.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Definitely the Jonas Brothers. They’re so fun, and I’ve always admired their songwriting, harmonies, and the energy they bring to everything they do.
Where can listeners follow and support your music?

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I want to release more music, and keep leveling up my production sound. My dream is to connect with more people and build a community around my songs.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That everything I make comes from a real place. I hope people see my heart in the music and feel like they’re growing with me as I evolve.
