MUSIC FOR YOUR EARS | REVIEW Nothing Makes Sense by Michael Blackwell

The multi-talented artist called Michael Blackwell, comes from county Durham but is based in London. He works within the rock and pop music genres and is a skilled singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He started to play the guitar at the tender age of ten, using bands such as Led Zeppelin, Cream and The Police as his models. He then moved on to 90’s artists such as Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and Nirvana. His current sound is a blend of classic rock, 90’s grunge, 00’s indie and modern alt-pop. While Nothing Makes Sense is Michael’s debut single as a solo artist, he is no stranger to the music industry. He has made a highly successful career for himself as a session musician, touring with well-known artists such as Lewis Capaldi and Amber Run. Not to mention, he is currently the guitarist for Louis Tomlinson.

With reference to this track, Nothing Makes Sense, recorded at Old Church Studios in Northumberland, UK, is a powerful song about self-confidence in the face of deep insecurity. Regarding the inspiration behind this release, Blackwell references the uncertainties regarding decisions made daily. No matter how positive a person feels, and how positive their character, it is hard to stop the self-doubt creeping in. He also says that what is important is to know yourself, your strengths and weaknesses and accept yourself as such. This feeling is reflected in the song, detailing the feeling of failure or defeat and looking for a boost to overcome life’s difficulties.

Nothing Makes Sense starts with mellow electric guitar with heavy reverberation. Before the song’s vocals there is an exhilarating guitar riff and drum beat. Michael’s soothing voice marvellously contrasts the hard core, rock instrumentation. The single’s grunge foundation blended with emotionally charged, raw, male vocals is highly reminiscent of the early 2000’s music scene. Michael’s voice maintains its clarity, lure and power as he ascends to higher registers throughout the song. The chorus is packed with energy and emotion, encouraging audiences to sing along.

With great production, perfect instrumentals combined with unique vocals, this track demonstrates the power of optimism and positivity over doubt and uncertainty. After hearing Michael Blackwell’s debut single, it’s safe to say that his talent, experience in the music industry, passion for song writing and strong fan base are all crucial factors pointing him in the direction of great success as a solo artist.
