“Borrowed Time” is the second single to be released as part of her debut EP due out in 2022 comprising songs all
written, arranged and produced by Pokkisham, featuring her on piano, keyboards, lead and all backing vocals.
Recorded at Eastcote Studios with post-production at Pokkisham’s home studio and The Bunker, UK, “Borrowed
Time” features the talents of stellar session and jazz guitarist John Parricelli guesting on this track alongside
Marco Quarantotto (drums) and Jason Reyes-Walsh (bass). The song has been mixed by UK heavyweight
producer and engineer Haydn Bendall (Kate Bush, Paul McCartney, Ryuchi Sakamoto and Andrea Bocelli) who
balances the maintaining a sense of live, authentic performance with the incredible production aesthetics.
Pokkisham weaves her love of different styles, mixing in her early Classical training in this arrangement, from the
chorale-style vocal intro to the Chopin-inspired piano arpeggio that forms the backbone of the song’s main groove.
The song is rousing as it ebbs and flows through different textures and harmonies as the story is told of how love has
shown too many “fault lines’ to be able to continue on. However there is a sense of moving forward and hope
beyond the pain now that it’s clear that our lovers are “living and loving on borrowed time” , building up to an
almost plaintive wail from the lead vocals in the bridge as the backing vocals soar alongside a rich organ part. The
song then drops back to a moment of quiet clarity provided by the return of the solo piano riff, before the band pick
up the groove for one last reminder of time moving us forward, before the final chord hits, leaving the listener to
feel just the “smithereens” of what is now left, as echoed in the decaying electric guitar sounds.
“Borrowed Time” has all the energy and writing approach of a retro styled pop song inspired by early Elton John
and Carole King and infused with modern, soulful vocal touches, raw blues-tinged guitar, poignant lyricism and
stellar production
