Who are the band members and what do they play?
In the beginning there was NELMAN, a person who wanted to listen to a very specific kind of electronic
music. To achieve this, he created the virtual band NELMAN MUSIC SYSTEM. This band, made up of
virtual robots, composed in its beginnings with an Amstrad CPC 464, programmed in Basic. Later a
small Casio VL-1 keyboard-calculator was added. This is where the first tracks came from. We are
talking about the 80’s When the economy allowed it, a splendid Kawai K4 was added, which has
delighted Nelman ever since. Today, Nelman Music System basically uses virtual instruments, taking
the band’s initial concept to its ultimate consequences. Reason, Waves Mercury, Steinberg Cubase SX,
Ableton Live, FL Studio, Adobe Audition, and many VST’s.
How and where did you get together?
The Nelman Music System project began its trajectory in Barcelona in the 80s of the last century.
What are the band’s main influences?
Our influences range from the original Tangerine Dream, through Kraftwerk, Klaus Schulze, Software,
Orbital or Jean-Michel Jarre, to Pete Namlook, John Talabot, Koreless, Cora Novoa, Biosphere, Autechre
and more.
Have you played any notable gigs, festivals or other events? Likewise radio or TV
appearances?
His music has been composed for his private sphere always, although this sphere has been
broadened occasionally. For example, in the 90’s Nelman Music System composed a theme as a
soundtrack for a Documentary called ‘Mundo Acuático’. It was produced by Dj Bailo from Sant Boi de
Llobregat, whose subject was the scuba fishing in the Costas del Garraf, close to Barcelona. Later in
2005, a theme selection was presented to the prestigious Electronic Music Festival SONAR, which takes
place in Barcelona every year although at last none song was selected. In the year 2007, Nelman Music
System participated in an Electronic Music compilation ‘Electronic Tour 2’ , made by the staff of the
forum ‘Fairlight Jarre’, who belongs to Jean-Michel Jarre Spanish official website. The selected theme
was ‘Human Voices’. In March 2008, ‘Future Music’ magazine publishes a Nelman Music System’s
theme at its demo section, ‘Retro-Secuencia’. Still in 2008, he takes part again in another compilation
from the aforementioned J.M.Jarre webpage, called ‘Electronic Tour 3’, with the song ‘Galaxies (Radio
edit)’. In the year 2009, Nelman Music System themes were broadcasted sometimes on the local
Ripollet Radio, in the program ‘Café con Sal’. A new ‘Fairlight Jarre’ webpage compilation was produced
in 2010, ‘Electronic Music 4’, Nelman Music System participated again in the album, with the song
‘Hiptótica Ariadna’. In 2012, a project that has taken 2 years has been finished, the collaboration
between the musicians of ‘Fairlight Jarre’ and the magazine ‘Future Music’. The fruit of this collaboration
is a compilation called ‘J.A.R.R.E.M.C.’ which is included in issue 180, corresponding to February, 2010.
Nelman Music System participates in this album with the theme ‘Desassossec: Histèria Col·lectiva’.
Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or
events that inspired it?
The Covid-19 Pandemic has meant a paradigm shift in our lives. One of the aspects, our language, where a series
of words have appeared that are now part of our day to day. This song is dedicated to this “word cloud” of our
PANDEMIC TIMES. This is a 130 BPM theme within the Techno-Pop line with IDM touches.
