Who are the band members and what do they play? Leng Moua
(songwriter, vocals, guitar), McCoy Seitz (drums, vocals), Tamara
Alswager (guitar, vocals), Elise Bremer (keys, vocals), Dillon Marchus
(bass)
Band Bio: Hyooman is an Alternative/Indie Rock band from
Minneapolis, MN. The band started as the brainchild of songwriter Leng
Moua who sought to make an album with his friend and former
bandmate (now drummer/producer) McCoy Seitz. The band was later
joined by Tamara Alswager (guitar), Dillon Marchus (bass), and Elise
Bremer (keys). The band is somewhere in between the lo-fi bedroom
pop of Alex G and the 90s/early 2000s Alternative Indie rock sound such
as Grandaddy or Pavement. In May 2021, the band released their first
single, “Half Brain.” In 2022, the band will follow up with the release of
their debut album Pilot.
Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any
particular music styles or events that inspired it? Making an
album can be very laborsome and meticulous if you get lost in the details.
In that way, it can suck all the joy out of the recording process and you
can lose sight of the bigger picture. So the ethos behind the album was,
“Let’s not try to pursue perfection. Let’s have fun with this. Let’s bring
good energy. Let’s be ourselves.” It’s about being Hyooman (human).
About the song… “Kid” is the first single off of our upcoming album
Pilot. The song serves as a catharsis for dealing with nostalgia. While
nostalgia is a yearning for the past it is can also be an indication of
something that’s missing in the present. Writing this song was a way of
trying to purge oneself from dwelling in nostalgia.
About the music video… The music video was filmed on a used
handheld camcorder Leng purchased online. The footage was captured
over the course of making the album – which spans between 2020-2021
– when the band members could meet safely. In that way, it’s fitting that
the music video is the first single and introduction to the album.
What can people expect without ever hearing our music…. The
songs are short and concise; they average in between 2 – 3 minutes long.
While the songs have their own personalities and identities, they are
cohesive because the band is represented in every song (all members
perform in each song). People may find something familiar and nostalgic
about the music, yet refreshing.
