The Trusted are Southend-on-Sea natives Dave Batchelor, Dale Holt-Mead, Fin Cunningham and Tom
Cunningham. Meeting in high school the four shared an enthusiasm for new Brit-rock led by the likes of
Catfish and the Bottlemen and The 1975, as well as classic late ‘70s new-wave icons The Clash and Elvis
Costello, and bonded over their mutual appreciation of a strong melody and atmospheric, edgy pop.
The Trusted thrive off their unique fusion of post-punk energy and 21st Century storytelling.
Blending pulsing synths with soaring guitars and a classy arrangement with enough bass drops to set your
heart racing, their latest single ‘Vellichor’ demonstrates the band’s ability to create a sound that is as much of
today as it is of their heritage, with a cool retro-electro feel throughout. The powerful and then gentle
interchange between the driving rhythm and the refrains serve to showcase the song’s unique lyric, utilising a
recently created word ‘Vellichor’ – here used to encapsulate the sense of the passing of time and
dissatisfaction with the trajectory of one’s life.
Lead Singer Tom Cunningham ‘This is a song about nostalgia. It’s about using the past as a drug to combat the
pains of today. The word ‘vellichor’ means ‘the smell of old bookshops.’ This song has nothing to do with the
meaning of the actual word but more with the feeling it creates. Vellichor in this context represents ‘the smell
of old emotions and the passing of time.’ The protagonist is unhappy and distraught with the way in which
their life has turned out. They are horrified at the new world and long for a different time or a previous life.’
Another of the many songs written during lockdown, and with the world seemingly changed in many ways
forever, Vellichor represents a sense of seeking solace in the past.
Released through Kerry on The Cake Records and mixed once again by the hugely talented Grammy
nominated Andy Bradfield (Elbow, David Gray, Rufus Wainwright) the track is a much more electronic/guitar
oriented fusion than the band have released in the past and delivers another of their classic lyrical stories
whilst maintaining an instantly memorable hook and melody.
The band has garnered hundreds of thousands of plays on Spotify alone, along with support from numerous
BBC stations. Known for their mind-blowing live sets, the band have performed at prestigious venues across
the UK, as well as two successful tours of Northern Italy, where they now have a huge following.
The Trusted were announced this year as one of the ‘Sounds of 2021’ by BBC Introducing and will be
headlining an exclusive BBC Introducing gig on 26th November at Chinnerys in Southend.
