Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Gab Harvy

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music is when I was about three or four years old. I put on a little musical show for my family during a gathering at my grandparents’ house. Looking back, I think that’s where my love for performing really started.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I honestly don’t remember a time when music wasn’t part of my life. I grew up in a very artistic family, so I’ve been surrounded by music and performing since I was little. In primary school I sang in the choir and performed in a musical every year, which really helped me develop my love for singing and acting.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My latest song, “Gaslighter,” was inspired by a difficult situation involving someone who was manipulating not only me but also people around us. Writing the song became a way of processing those emotions.
The funny thing is that the idea came completely out of nowhere. I was on the bus home from school listening to Camila Cabello when the melody and lyrics suddenly popped into my head.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I’d describe my music as having one core identity that’s constantly exploring different directions. My voice is the foundation, but I’m inspired by many different artists and genres, so every song goes somewhere different while still feeling like me.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I’ve learned not to force creativity. The best songs happen naturally. If I try too hard, nothing feels right, but when inspiration comes, everything falls into place.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Honestly, I don’t need much. Give me a pen, a piece of paper, and a piano or guitar, and I’m happy. That’s usually where every song begins.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’m absolutely obsessed with “Mis” by Alex G. The production is beautiful, and there’s something so tender and emotional about his voice that it almost makes me tear up before the song has even properly started.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My music is basically a reflection of my life. It’s how I process emotions, make sense of situations, and understand myself a little better. Almost every song comes from a real experience or feeling, which makes it my own sound.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope people really listen to the lyrics and notice the little details in the music. The story isn’t only in words. It’s also in the way I sing certain lines, the instruments, and the atmosphere of the song. Everyone connects with music differently, and I love that people can find their own meaning in my songs.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
To stay true to my artistic vision. There will always be people who doubt you or try to make you second guess yourself, but I’ve learned that the best music comes from trusting your instincts instead of trying to please everyone.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Definitely Rock Werchter. I’ve been there as part of the audience, and ever since then I’ve dreamed of performing on one of those stages myself.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d love to collaborate with beabadoobee or Lana Del Rey. I think our voices would blend beautifully, and I really admire the atmosphere they create in their music.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I want to keep surprising people. You’ll hear everything from pop to jazz and probably a few unexpected genres in between. I also hope to play many more live shows and keep growing creatively with every release.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I hope people discover that I’m actually very approachable. I’ve had fans tell me they saw me somewhere but were too nervous to say hello. If you ever see me out in public, don’t be afraid to come over and say hi. I promise I don’t bite!
