Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Jameson Day

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Hearing Johnny B by The Hooters on the Radio and figuring out how to play it on my toy piano at the age of two.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started creating music for myself in my teen years, but started mixing and producing music for others professionally in 2017. Shortly after I started my own business, Pick This Production recording studio.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
About Times is all about my life and growing up in Manitoba, Canada. Many of my songs are written about family and friends in the Interlake region or playing shows around the province.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I don’t like breaking down genres too much so I would probably say 90s rock.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
You can only learn so much playing on your own. Playing with others, filling in for band members, recording music outside of your comfort zone have all contributed to my style of playing music today.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My songs usually start with strumming a guitar and finding a good melody. But, I play almost everything; drums, bass, piano, synth, percussion, vocals, and so on. I played everything on my album.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’m really liking C~Soul – What are we waiting for?
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My personal experiences are the main focus of my music. Most of my lyrics are taken from my life growing up in Manitoba.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Family and your experiences in life are precious. Hold on to them.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Patience. Good things come with time and that includes music. Trust your process and your music will let you know when it is ready for an audience.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
My goal is to play at the Burton Cummings Theatre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The sound is amazing in that space.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
It would be my late father. I think he would have loved to be a part of my recording studio. I know wherever he is, he would be proud of what I am doing.
