Formula Indie Sessions : Interview with Chloe Jane

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music is watching Lady Gaga perform at MSG when I was 10 years old. I remember I begged my parents to take me to her Monster Ball and I remember being in the back of the area watching her like she was a goddess and no one else was in that room but me. I promised myself I was going to pursue the same thing and be on that stage one day.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I started writing songs when I was 11 years old. I had a piano teacher who taught me how to play chords on the piano and I took that knowledge of the few chords I had learned and started writing my own songs. I would get inspiration for song titles from names of makeup. I remember one of the first songs I wrote was a song called “Rulebreaker” which was a red MAC lipstick. I was also attending an all-girls school in NYC and I was getting bullied at school during that time. I wrote it about the girls who were bullying me and breaking the rules and never getting caught for doing so.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I am currently working on my debut album titled “Princess of the Night.” I am the princess of the night. That is my alter ego when I am on that dancefloor commanding the night. I feel like the best version of myself when I am on stage or DJing and bringing people together to escape reality and all negativity outside. This is my calling I feel as an artist- to share light, positivity, and make the world a bit more fun, as it can be very dark.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I would say my sonic palette is inspired by a mix of Lady Gaga, Robyn, and Dua Lipa. I love to write great pop melodies with productions that mix electronic synths and groovy bass lines with real instruments like piano and strings. I love full productions and writing deep lyrics over dance beats that you can dance or cry to.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Always start a song at the piano. If a song sounds great stripped back at the piano, it will be great when you add a full production around it.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
I love writing songs at my piano. Even if I want to write an uptempo dance song, I still write the best songs when I am on the piano playing around with chords and melodies that can then be translated to any genre after.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I am loving Haute and Freddy. “Shy Girl” and “Dance the pain away” are my favs. Their nostalgic 80s production with amazing melodies and lyrical storytelling feels really fresh and is really inspiring. Also their whole world, which they created with their visuals, outfits, and online persona, is really unique. Today it is not just about the music, it is the whole world you are inviting your listener into which matters, and I feel they do a really great job at that.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I definitely pull a lot from my personal experiences. My new song “Middle Man” which just came out, is about me being the Middle Man between my parents. They always rely on me to be the glue and hold them together. It can be a lot of pressure and really hard sometimes. They are really supportive of me, though, and are actually in the music video I shot for it, which came out last week! You should definitely give it a watch – “Middle Man” by Chloe Jane on YouTube!
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope listeners feel uplifted and empowered when they listen to my music and come to my shows. I want to create a safe space where everyone can be themselves and not feel judged. An escape from the real world.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Being a full time artist has taught me many things. One important lesson – do not take “No” for an answer. In this industry you hear a million “nos” before a yes – so to not get discouraged or give up- to always keep going.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Dream venue is MSG. I would love to do my headline show at MSG on ice that they have under the floor for the hockey as I am a figure skater and would love to do my whole show on ice.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I would love to collaborate with Cher!! I adore her, she is such an inspiration as an artist, performer, fashionista, actress, and just overall person. I just read her book and am so inspired by her story.
