Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with City Circuits

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Me(Dave) and my brother Jonathan had older brothers who were in their own band performing shows here and there and they always rehearsed in our basement so it was constant music in the house nonstop.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
At some point our dad asked us if we’d be interested in learning an instrument like our older brothers. I chose guitar and Jonathan chose drums and after years learning and finally being able to play a decent chord we started writing songs and started a band. That band eventually disbanded but fast forward and now we’re in a band again along with Corey our brother in law.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
We’re always writing and releasing music, trying to stay consistent. This current song “It’s You, Not Me (I Promise)” was the result of messing around with ideas and we eventually stumbled upon this fun sarcastic song about ex girlfriends playing the victim.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Nostalgic but modern. We have a very 80’s, 90’s aesthetic to our music but we keep up with modern hooks and melodies to keep things fresh.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
A simple chorus can go a long way. A song that takes off is usually one people can sing along to. If you complicate the lyrics or go all over the place with chords and melodies when it’s supposed to be the hook, then people will have nothing to “hook” onto.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
It really can depend. Somedays messing around with a simple keyboard or guitar will be enough to spark creativity but sometimes I’ll create something in Logic that has a bunch of sounds and loops and use that to play along with till finally something clicks.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I don’t know if they’re considered indie by the general definition of the word but I’ve been listening to the band “Valley” recently. They are fellow Canadians and started not too far from our hometown.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
It’s funny and kind of a little known fact amongst a small group of fans that most of my writing inspiration comes from other people’s experiences. I live a pretty chill and simple life and as much as I’d love for some drama to happen and give me inspiration, it doesn’t happen that often to me. However drama, love triangles and crazy break ups etc tend to happen to everyone around me. So someone will tell me some story in their life and i’ll think to myself huh that’s a pretty good premise for a song haha.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Honestly, my intention is always just to write good music, so if you enjoy the song, that’s enough. If you want to find a deeper meaning and it changes your life in some way then by all means that’s awesome too.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music is a universal language. It’s the one thing that connects all of us as human beings. What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
All of them! haha. Honestly though there’s no specific venue or festival I can name but the dream is to have sold out shows with fans singing our songs back at us wherever that may be.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Man, I would’ve loved to collaborate with Phil Collins back in the day. Every song that man made was a hit, at least to my ears.
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)
Ya we’re on all the streaming sites. Spotify, Apple Music, you name it. here’s a link that will guide you to everything:
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
We love performing. Bigger and better shows seem to be the dream going forward. More listeners who become super fans would be nice too.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
We’re here for a good time, not a long time. We love writing and just having fun so we can only hope listeners come along for the ride.
