Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with THE BOY

Answers by THE BOY
Introduction of the project
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My mother was a piano teacher. And she taught me piano when I was in elementary school. She was and is a very gentle, kind and warm person, but when she taught piano, she was a completely different person and scary!
How did your passion for creating music begin?
The biggest reason I started creating music was the death of my pet dog. I just needed to get my emotions out.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I just couldn’t fit in at school. I started skipping school, and on top of that, I was subjected to violence from adults I trusted. A combination of various factors led to me developing a mental disorder. I don’t want to hide this fact. And I want to succeed. I want to break the prejudice against mental illness in society, and to inspire others who are suffering in the same way by saying, “Even I could do it!”.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Unique, imperfect, and genre-free.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I learned the greatness of G chords from Oasis.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
This might be a bit off topic, but I think experience is essential when creating music.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Tool and Radiohead.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I became a fan of alternative rock, but now we’re in the age of pop music and the rock media is jumping on the bandwagon. It’s frustrating, to be honest.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
2 messages. “I feel you”. “I don’t know you but I love you”.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Earlier this year, I saw Underworld live, and for the first time I understood the meaning of dance music. For me, dancing is about being free in body and mind.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
That’s a difficult question. When I was performing live in the past, I always thought, “I want to watch my performance!”. I always put on crazy performances. But if I had to say, I’d love to play my most dangerous track on the biggest stage at Fuji Rock Festival. Not just perform, but play. Even if it’s just one song.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’m not interested in collaborations, I just can’t get along with other people when it comes to music…But…..I want to shout with John Lennon. Because he’s an absolute genius.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
I think it’s just a matter of making better songs and getting as many people as possible to listen to them.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I want people to realize that I’m “someone nobody knows.”
