Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with sin

I’m Sin, I’m an Independent artist from Eora/ Sydney Australia.

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Oh, this is hard. I remember having a strong reaction to music since I was really, really young. It’s always been very transportive for me, and ins some ways, essential. Which I’m aware sounds strange. On another note, The Spice Girls movie kinda of changed my life, I think I re-watched it about 100 times when I was 7, singing and dancing to every song impeccably – obsessed would be an understatement.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I started writing as what felt like a necessity. It came out of me whether I wanted it to or not. There were probably things I was thinking and feeling that I don’t think I could explore is any other form, so in that way, it feels more like something that’s happening to me, rather than me doing it, if that makes sense? It’s an incredibly special feeling that I hope everyone gets to experience in some form, like finishing a painting or cooking a really fucking good meal. It’s magical, satisfying and beautiful to create something from nothing.

Whats the story behind your current music project?

It’s always changing, to be honest. Oh, maybe that’s the story?

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I always have trouble with this haha. Sensual, dynamic, punchy, truthful, intimate, playful. “Like dark clouds weaving through stars” (my boyfriend said this part).

What is one thing youve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

It’s never going to feel finished, so banishing that notion was incredibly freeing. I still have trouble with it, though. I think anyone who makes anything does.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Everything! I find myself inspired by my environment constantly, I’m living in a humid, tree-filled city right now and I know it sounds cliché but I’ll sit in the backyard and hear a pitch/sound/ bird and instantly start humming something.
I’m playing around a lot with new instruments at the moment in anticipation for my longer form project. I always write/ start with my guitars, I”m a guitar and a vocalist first and foremost in that way. With production, that’s a whole new world for me, I’m using my Native Instruments Machine a lot right now and it’s so fun (ty to my man).

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

I’v been listening to lots of RNB actually. But I’d say Zeke Bleu, Ora Cogan, Nina Cobram.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

I think when you write there’s no way of avoiding that, they are always in there, directly, or indirectly, interwoven within the fabric of what’s coming out. Some songs feel more influenced than others, though. Even the fun ones have a lot of who I am and what I’ve seen I guess. But overall, I don’t really explicitly write about my experiences, I prefer to breach into something more imagined.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope they feel seen, sexy or simply just that they enjoyed that 3 minutes. If it’s deeper than than then great, we’re connecting and we’ve never met, that’s beautiful. but it doesn’t need to be. Simply just that that someone enjoys it in whatever form is so special. My friend said she’s been screaming to the end Usually, I in her car and I find that so hilarious and beautiful.

Whats the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Patience. The fundamental importance of creativity – and and my own capabilities.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I’ve actually never thought about this. Glastonbury, I have to go big don’t I? Definitely Glastonbury. I watched a performance recently where BTS performed on the Han river bridge in Seoul, it was magnetising. So, maybe the Sydney harbour bridge? With BTS.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

The the best and most difficult question. So many. Joe strummer, if he were alive. IVOXYGEN – I think that would be unreal, Eliot sumner, KWN, and BTS.

Looking toward the future, whats your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I want to incorporate all the work I do in film into powering the storytelling as creatively as possible. It’s ambitious, but the process is so fulfilling. I’m so excited to release the songs I haven’t yet, and so ready to grow on what I’ve already done, I hope that journey and what it creates is just as exciting for those following along. I’m a horrific self-marketer by nature, and very private, because I’m just in such special (and busy) place in my life right now. Sharing the things that bring me so much joy just doesn’t come naturally to me, it feels like it might taint it. Everything in life is provisional really, right? So it just feels wrong not to absolutely eat up every moment to it’s fullest when you’re in a place of happiness and able to create (I know, I know how it sounds).

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

Something about themselves. About me though? Hmm, I’m not to sure, I hope they find it artistic, authentic, different. But mostly, something about themselves.
