Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Old Crush

C20DC9AA-1AEF-4386-A7B3-F80B22C55572

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

My eldest brother playing ‘Moonlight Sonata’ by Beethoven on the piano when I was like 5 years old. Its probably in my top 3 favorite songs to this day.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I’ve always enjoyed creative writing and I started to learn the guitar when I had knee surgery from a skateboarding injury at around 16 years old. I finally decided to try to put the music and words together after a pretty rough breakup – I know cliche – when I was 20 and it just became the most rewarding creative outlet.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

I was really burnt out from work and life in LA towards the end of COVID, so I quit my job, traveled a bit and ended up settling in Berlin. The dominant electronic scene instantly started changing my perception of what music could be, since I was mostly a “rock” purist at the time. I started to mess around and incorporate more synths and electronic drum sounds into my home demos and slowly they turned into this different thing that became Old Crush.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I always say lo-fi alternative synth rock but I think thats just what I want it to be. Actually what I really want it to be is 80’s dark detective pop but in the end, I think its just really indie/bedroom pop or something.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Letting go of how I want it to sound and just do what comes out naturally. Accept the weirdness and just go with the flow.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Hangovers, Logic Pro, hardship, my Hagstrom guitar, drama, and green tea.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

I’m in love with the song “Jezebel” by Sade right now. I know thats not indie but its hitting the spot recently. But ok, if is an indie artist Baxter Dury has been on rotation lately.

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

In every way, because thats basically all I write about. I wish I could make up stories and turn them into songs and create this persona but I’m no good at all that.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

No real deep message yet, just hopefully a shared experience and some cool music to go along with it. If you can relate to something someone else has experienced or gone through, then you don’t feel so alone. Or even if you can’t relate, maybe you can at least enjoy the music. Just feel something.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That all taste is subjective.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

Don’t really have a specific one, but I’d love something intimate where no one is that is standing or sitting is too far away and the sound is good for everyone.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Probably Marc Bolan of T.Rex. I feel he could produce and bring out some wild and weird side of me musically.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

That I hate oysters. Sry.
