Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with aKa Essere

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory connected to music is me dancing to Michael Jackson in my parents kitchen with them cheering me up to go wild.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I used to love music since I was a kid but never thought I could actually create it until one of my close friends sent me a recording of him rapping over a beat. I told to myself, if he can, I can too. I started writing lyrics on paper and rapping over random instrumentals off youtube and fell in love with it immediately.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current music project is called Apus in Cairo which means sunset in Cairo. It embelishes my journey from a stressed out hater, to a more relaxed person that shows how far I’ve come.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
The latest and future projects are pretty chill vibes with a west coast infusion but with my own twist since I am also creating most of the instrumentals so I have full control of the sound.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Making beats. While having full control of the sound, I can take out elements and add others where is neede in order to create a perfect harmony between the vocals and the instruments.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
For the mic, I used to own a few more expensive mics but I love the sound of the Shure SM7B, I have some ADAM T7V Speakers, an FL Key 49 that helps so much with making instrumentals and my preferred DAW is FL Studio.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Larry June. The GOAT.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I used to try and write from ‘others’ perspective but I think the best songs are the ones coming from the experiencing and living life.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want to bring positive good vibes to everyone. Make them feel like they can do whatever they put their heads to and that they’ll have to work to get it.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
There are no handouts. If you want it, you have to go get it.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Coachella yesssir
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Larry June, Drake – they just make great music.
