Formula Indie Sessions Interview with Losange

Losange - Avatar 3000

-What is your earliest memory connected to music?

When I was very young, I had a whole repertoire of songs that I used to sing. It must have made an impression on the people around me, because my parents later paid for piano lessons when I was six years old.

-How did your passion for creating music begin?

I had a rock band in high school. In that context I developed a taste for sound production, then pursued studies in that direction. At the same time, I began experimenting with related tools. At first I composed mainly with my guitar, then little by little with synthesizers.

-What’s the story behind your current music project?

My Losange project dates back to 2012. It is computer based music, without vocals, essentially focused on melodies and harmony. The name Losange, which means diamond in English, refers to my attraction to pure geometric shapes, and because music is geometric.

-How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Rich and gentle harmonies, stimulating structures, synthetic tones, emotional, playful, sometimes mystical.

-What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

That a MIDI piece by Mozart or the Beach Boys is already brilliant as it is, which shows that a good piece of music is, before being a matter of production, above all a matter of harmonic construction. But it’s just my taste and opinion.

-What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process? I only use Ableton Live’s internal tools, an old version, version 8.

-How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

My music is a reflection of my life, whether I want it or not, even if music is abstract and primarily meant to be appropriated by the listener. It therefore evolves along with me and my influences.

-What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I hope to bring softness, stimulation, spiritual hope, an emotional refuge for those who make my music their own.

-What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Is life a pretext for listening to music?

-What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

I would dream of being able to play at a festival of a size equivalent to the Trans Musicales, where I played in 2018.

-Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website, Spotify, IG, links) My personal website: www.benoit-baudrin.com

My albums: www.losange.bandcamp.com

All my music: www.soundcloud.com/losange

My Instagram with my visuals: www.instagram.com/losange.visual

-Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

I am working on a set of tracks that I would like to be danceable. I will maybe use it to start playing live again, and to try to make people dance, in my own way.

-What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

I am a discreet person. My computer music exists within a project, with an ethic, and I do not want to personify it. On a more personal note, contrary to what my music might suggest, I am someone who enjoys joking around.
