Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with LUPSTA

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Some of my earliest memories are tied to music is my mom playing music around and in the car, growing up. It wasn’t just background noise, it felt like emotion filling the room. I remember sounds sticking with me before I even understood what they meant, and that feeling never left.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
When I was maybe 11 years old, my mom bought herself a keyboard. She wanted to tech herself how to play, but it never happened. So I would take the keyboard in the middle of the night and practice playing it for hours, this sparked creation.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
This year I have started gravitating towards my own unique sound, I feel my latest project represents that perfectly. It doesn’t sound like something else song, or not even tied to a specific genre but something everyone can enjoy.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
Nostalgic and memory triggering. With each song there is intention and purpose, this is why it takes some time to build a song piece by piece, because not only am I singing and writing myself, but also producing the entire track myself too. Which you can imagine can take some time because I am constantly changing things. By the end of it I’ll have a dozen versions of the song.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I always make music with the thought that someone new could be listening, so how am I presenting myself when they listen to my lyrics or the production, what emotion are they feeling when they listening to my music. For a long time I was making it for myself and keeping it hidden, because I felt vulnerable sharing my emotions and experiences. I then learned to let it go.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My DAW Ableton for sure, I also do everything in my AKG headphones entirely. Rarely do I ever use monitors because I have gotten used to it. I live in LA where apartment walls are thin, and I don’t wanna get kicked out of my place.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I just recently heard a song from a guy called Mk.gee. I really like his music.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Yes, allot of my music is just about my life and different experiences I have had. Sometimes it’s experiences that I maybe see myself in or want to be in.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope they feel “something”, I don’t necessarily want them to feel something specific, but if I can evoke any type of emotion, I think I’m doing a good job.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music is a universal language.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
At&T stadium and Madison Square garden.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Micheal Jackson, he is definitely the most influential musical that has ever lived. If I collated with him I’m almost certain the song would have 120Billion streams.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
From here, I’m just trying to challenge myself to be better at my craft, I would love to collaborate with more people, and hopefully inspire others though music. But right now I’m just trying to have fun.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That I am not normal, in a good way. I am insanely obsessed with music. I am quite mysterious and can go off the grid for a while just to clear my head and get inspiration.
