Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with zorin morris

ZORIN MORRIS

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

I gave up the guitar! Wow how sad.  Then I worked for a venue that hosted large tours. I was the go to guy for a large production road crew.  And that was the beginning and the end.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

After many years i began to write.  As a writer the challenge is to find a story, an anthem, weaave a story into a story and create something that makes you tap your foot and sing; or makes you stop and think.  From there anything is possible.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

As a writer you live in fear of never having another song.  When you get one its to be cherished and nothing else matters.  Then its time to rest and curate sound.  This may not be the traditional way to create music but its the way that works for me.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

Either delicately positioned or stupidly placed.  The music tries to walk a fine balance between the best of retro 80s 90s and mix it with a distinctly modern twist.  Most modern music seems to be trending in the same direction which is ironic by chasing something new they end up in the same spot.  For me that’s an opportunity to disrupt.  Take a modern song and look back, take a risk cross genre, so far the results have produced some great Zorin Morris songs with catchy lyrics and a very cool vibe.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

Some of the greatest songs are stories that people connect with metaphorically spiritually or physically; so much so they resonate for the rest of their lives.  If you are privileged to create one of those songs its a precious honour.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

Music may lend itself to AI but unless its creativity is based on human perception there will be nothing new going forward.  The simple joy that comes from creating lyric, chord and melody is unique to human life.  The world does not need replicas in needs more uniqueness.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

Right now its Christmas and like many muscians i face a dilemma…What should i listen to?  Usually i pick a Christmas song and dig a little deeper into the artist; this year I cannot go past Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea. I will then to bring it home with the Maverick Saints ft Chris Falson singing since i laid my burdens down. We all need a bit of peace and goodwill..

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

Personal experiences are a natural starting point, though that’s often a very small well to draw from.  I often find greater inspiration and depth looking for experiences that matter to others and find a connection that I can relate to and then go on a journey.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

Hope can be found in my songs; though like most emotions a double act is always better that just one idea. Faith and hope; love and struggle; happy and sad; there are many mixed emotions in my work that allows a listener to dwell, ponder decant a word, phase or lick and if it helps their perspective i am honoured.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

Music is a deeply personal journey that is forced to measure itself not on how you felt after a song starts or what you connected with; rather how music fits in a world of valueless consumerism.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

A venue with a great sound mixer and crowd.  When i mean great i mean the kind of venue that has spent years perfecting it.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

Can i slightly change this question? Who from the past would leave me speechless to jam with? David Bowie, Byran Ferry and Ric Ocasek; intense trailblazers in sound mixed with focus on the extraordinary all different and unique.

Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)

Bandcamp and zorinmorris.com.  All the major streaming sites have Zorin’s Morris music though i think the next few releases might go a bit more organic.  I have a series of live gigs on the drawing board in 2026 so it will be a busy year.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?

The Zorin Morris band can get to tour more.  That’s the plan lets see how far we can go!

We have more than 50 songs on the set list so there is no shortage of content.

What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?

Challenge yourself to stop tapping your feet or stop singing along to a song from Zorin Morris its not easy and its not much fun.  Its better just to sing and dance with Zorin Morris.
