Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Wuzy Bambussy

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
I think it must be when I was 7. My Nan bought me a kids drum set from a certain UK superstore. It lasted a week before my dad snapped and took an axe to it. If anything that act of wanton Keith Moon style destruction impressed me even more and only hardened my resolve.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I did actually start** **pretty young. I think by the age of 11 I’d picked up a Boss Dr Rhythm drum machine and a Casio keyboard. I was writing these rudimentary instrumental pieces which to me sounded like TV theme tunes.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I was looking to start a duo and had in mind the vocalist would be female. I’ve only ever worked with guys before so it makes a nice change. I met Kat on a musician finder website and weirdly she was the first singer I stumbled upon. We began trading ideas and chatting culminating in 10 tracks. Originally those 10 tracks were going to form an LP but we decided instead to stagger them instead as a series of 10 monthly singles. That took up most of my 2023, it was a seriously intense schedule and I was pretty relieved when it was complete.
We’ve now followed that up with our first debut LP proper which is titled ‘The Ghost & The Rhythm’ that releases in April 2026. Little Lion is the first single from the LP.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I would say it’s a hybrid of the organic and electronic worlds. It’s independent electro rock from the wilds of the English West Country. There’s elements of jazz, of funk, of R&B. It’s deep slinky grooves with a sensual swagger. We use session cats playing brass and strings, plus a friend of mine Iggy Deverall is an ever constant on guitars.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Go with your heart. If it moves your feet and bobs your head then the battle is already won. Don’t linger on jams if they’re not up to standard. Just move on quickly until you come up with something that moves the dial.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
My*** set up is pretty ***basic, I run Logic X.
I play in a lot of live drums and percussion mixed in with samples, I play in live bass also blended in with synth bass, generally with my Moog Sub 37 or my little Behringer SH-101 knock off. Songs almost always start with ideas written on a midi keyboard with stock logic sounds then when I’m happy with the structure and tempo I’ll start playing the organic sounds in. I’ll pretty much always have the vocal melody in mind and that’ll be there with a piano or organ, sometimes these even get left in on the finished tune to back up the vocals.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I really like Little Light by Supalung
It’s really uplifting and quite lovely.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I mean lived experience is everything isn’t it? It has to be. I’m a sponge that soaks up the whole history of musical endeavour. Then I’ll wring it back out and put my own little twist on things.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I hope that people find inspiration to make their own thing, to start up their own bedroom studio and throw themselves in. I hope they find a hope and humanity in a world that rapidly seems to be losing both.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
That you can change a persons life for the better. Music has an innate power to teach, to heal, to empower, to motivate. As the Arts go music is a potent little beast.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
To be honest I just don’t have the love for taking music out live anymore. I’m happy just being a reclusive writer.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
I’d*** ***love to write a tune for Big Special. I love what they do & Joe has such an incredible voice.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
* *Crack on with writing the next album, I’d also love to do a few collabs with other vocalists or musicians so hit me up folks!
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I dunno man, my favourite artists have always been those that retain a veil of mystique. They aren’t out there yabbing on Insta 24/7. It’s no coincidence music has suffered since you see into every facet of someone’s existence. It’s lame, get back in the studio and turn the WiFi off.
