Formula Indie sessions Interview with Nazaakunna

Introduction of the Project
I am Nazaakunna, a Nigerian Afro-Gospel singer, songwriter, and recording artist whose music sits at the intersection of faith and contemporary African sound. Born and raised in Owerri, Imo State, and now based in Lagos, my sound blends Afrobeats, R&B, rap, and gospel worship into music that is both reflective and rhythm-driven. My art is rooted in personal testimony, songs shaped by faith, gratitude, grace, and redemption, created not just for listening, but for spiritual connection and honest expression in Christ.
What is your earliest memory connected to music?
My earliest memory of music goes back to singing in the church choir as a child. That environment introduced me to music as more than sound; it was testimony, worship, and storytelling. It was there I learned how emotion, melody, and dynamics could be used to communicate faith and touch hearts beyond words.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion grew organically from church, where music and faith were inseparable for me. A major turning point came when I won a rap competition at Klub Daniel’s Talent Show. That moment validated something deep within me; it showed me that music wasn’t just a hobby, but a calling worth pursuing seriously.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My current body of work reflects my ongoing faith journey and lived experiences. As an independent artist, I’ve intentionally built music that fuses groove with worship. My debut EP, An Attitude of Gratitude, released in 2023, captures this heart posture—songs centred on thanksgiving, grace, and hope, wrapped in Afro-centric production. Every project I release is a piece of testimony meant to encourage listeners to embrace faith in our Lord Jesus authentically.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
I’d describe my sound as Afro-Gospel that makes you move while feeding your spirit. It carries the pulse of Afrobeats, the smoothness of R&B, and a strong gospel foundation. It’s energetic yet reflective music that works on the dancefloor but still leaves room for worship and introspection.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Authenticity. I learned that my strongest songs come from being honest about my walk with God. Life pressures, family responsibility, uncertainty, and the need for grace became things I stopped hiding and started writing about. That shift transformed my music into something more personal, more spiritual, and more impactful.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
Digital production tools are central to my creative workflow. I rely heavily on DAWs to shape rhythm, texture, and atmosphere, layering warm chords, expressive vocals, and Afro-inspired percussion to balance dance energy with lyrical depth and worship sensitivity.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I’m constantly exploring emerging Afro-Gospel and alternative faith-based artists such as Limoblaze, Prinx Emmanuel, Kelar Thrillz, Greatman Takit and many more, who are pushing creative boundaries. I enjoy discovering new sounds rather than fixating on one artist, it keeps my inspiration fresh and open.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
My life experiences are inseparable from my music, from growing up in a Christian home in Lagos, navigating marriage, fatherhood, responsibility, and faith in real time. These realities shape my songwriting, turning songs into lived reflections rather than abstract messages.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Hope, gratitude, and reassurance. I want listeners to feel God’s grace and mercy through the music that I make. Songs like Undeserving reflect the idea of unmerited favour, reminding people that faith isn’t about perfection, but about grace, trust, and joy even in uncertainty.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
Music has taught me that it is a powerful form of ministry. From church choir days to studio sessions, I’ve seen how honest music can minister, comfort, and redirect hearts toward God while still speaking to everyday realities.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
One of my dream stages is The Experience in Lagos, alongside international faith-driven platforms like Hillsong Conference, spaces where worship, excellence, and global community come together.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Jeremiah Gyang. His ability to merge gospel with contemporary sounds while keeping the message intact is something I deeply admire. A collaboration would be a powerful cross-cultural exchange of faith, rhythm, and innovation.

Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
My dream is to become a defining voice in the new wave of faith-driven Afrobeats, reaching global audiences through music that moves people physically and spiritually, while staying rooted in purpose and truth.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
I hope they discover a man deeply committed to faith, family, and obedience, a life transformed by grace. Like “a brand plucked out of the fire,” my story is one of redemption, and my music exists to reflect that journey and encourage others to live authentically in Christ.
