Formula Indie Sessions – Interview with Vinyl

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Even though all of us have very different first memories connected to music, I think we all discovered it through our families. Some of our closest relatives were professional musicians, while others pursued music as a passion in their free time. For me personally (Simone, the singer), it was singing a canon together with my parents.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I love the way music is capable of connecting people and touching the deepest emotions. Sometimes I need a way to express my feelings but can’t really put them into words. So I sit at the piano and start to play. The moment when you realize that the melody perfectly fits the way you feel and the words suddenly start to spill out is pure magic. All of a sudden, you don’t feel sad anymore — or you feel even happier — because you’ve just created something so beautiful that needs to be shared.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
At the moment, we are working on two songs that are very special to us because they brought us closer together as a band. While writing them, the energy of the sounds was so powerful and energizing that we knew this kind of music would be a big part of our journey. These songs make it impossible to stand still — you have to dance!
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
This is the part where we always start to struggle, haha, because our music is very diverse. Sometimes it’s emotional and vulnerable, and sometimes it’s loud and forward. So when we’re asked, we usually say something like: a mix of rock, indie, punk, alternative — with a bit of a Billie Eilish vibe.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Sometimes less is more. You don’t always have to show off your skills. Sure, sometimes it’s nice — but there are moments when quiet and simple parts have the strongest effect and make the song feel complete.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
All of our instruments are very important because most of the time our new songs start completely unintentionally. Someone begins playing a random melody, the others join in, and suddenly it just feels right and easy. In those moments, it’s essential to record everything on a smartphone so we can listen to it over and over again and develop new ideas.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
Right now I listen a lot to Berq. The way his music just fills the whole room is amazing!
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
For me personally, music has to be able to take me into another world. It has to be relatable and emotional. Sometimes it makes me cry, sometimes it gives me a lot of energy, and sometimes it makes me angry about everything that’s going on. But it always has to spark my imagination and fantasy.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Knowing that they are not alone! There are always people who think and feel the same way. We want our listeners to let go for a moment and just be themselves. Dance, shout, cry… whatever you need and want to do!
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
If you feel sad, try to express yourself! Write it down! Sometimes you can make something so pure and beautiful out of it, that you dont feel sad anymore, but excited!
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
We would love to play at a CSD and maybe the Finkenbach festival!
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
This is very difficult, because there are so many I would like to meet! I think one of them would be Billie Eilish. I just love listening to her voice!
