Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Prosegold

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Growing up I had a neighbor who was about 7 or 8 years older than me. My brother is. 3 years older than me, and my neighbor had a brother my age as well. We had a little neighborhood posse. I was like five years old , this was 1992. Believe it or not, he slid me Guns N Roses Appetite for Destruction at 5 years old. Not exactly the type of music an infant should be listening to, but I loved it. My earliest musical memory that was all my own, was holding an original pressing of Appetite For Destruction at 5 years old.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
My passion for creating music came quite naturally. I’ve heard songwriters describe writing music as an affliction. It’s an ailment. It’s something you can’t stop. I assume all true songwriters have this in common. When we have a moment? We construct melodies and lyrics in our mind. It’s a defense mechanism I suppose . One that is deeply ingrained in my psyche. I’m glad to have it. It’s my best friend. My shadow.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
My musical partner , Adrian and I , have been making music together since we were 15, 16 years old. We met in high school. We’ve never released an official project together . It’s really a testament to perfectionism . It’s somewhat perplexing when I think about it. We have such a vast volume of material , spanning a 20 year friend ship. 90% of it unreleased. We have enough music to coast on for the rest of our lives . It’s such a vast library to choose the best material for a debut from. So many people rush to publish. I’ve had the itch as well. But it’s a very soothing feeling to be so confident in the trove of material you have . To know you can release a volume of content that is undeniably great from start to finish. We made a commitment that we wouldn’t release anything until we were able to know this for a fact . Not many people can say that , I suppose.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It’s eclectic. It’s all genres and none simultaneously. We are capable of it all. We have digested all the greatest popular music from the entire spectrum. We want to do it all. Have something for everyone.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Music has the ability to get people through such difficult situations. I can remember being a child, and never feeling alone . Always having that sound. I’m just trying to pay it back to the cosmos.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
We’ve been blessed to be able to work with state of the art digital and analogue hardware/software. I’m fascinated by what DW Fearn does in the analogue sphere . The Unfairchild 670M2 compressor is mind blowing to say we are privileged to work with. My partner Adrian, is always teaching me about the latest and greatest innovations in recording techniques. Manley microphones, all sorts of synthesizers ( Moog, Arturia, Behringer, Sequential ). Fender and Gibson guitars. It’s never a dull moment in his studio.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
I don’t really know much about modern music. I like Paramore though. Hailey Williams is unreal.
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
I think music is inherently autobiographical. We reflect our day to day lives and experiences within the art form. Everything about it is personal.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
Find something to be grateful for. Survive. Persevere.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It’s what I was born to do. I’m grateful that I can say that clearly. So many people search their entire lives for the meaning of this thing. I’ve known since I was a child.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
Oh god, I just want to meet my hero’s and thank them before they pass away. Most of them are getting there unfortunately.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain.
