Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Secret Molecules

What is your earliest memory connected to music?
Playing a little red toy piano while my mother was doing aerobics at a gym in the eighties.
How did your passion for creating music begin?
I don’t know exactly but even when I was quite young I remember thinking up my own little songs. Songs like Brand New Key by Melanie and A Hard Day’s Night were played at my home (on a radio with a cassette player) and I really liked them. I started getting into writing music myself when I could play on my uncle’s guitar on Sunday afternoons at my grandma’s house.
What’s the story behind your current music project?
I asked some talented Dutch musicians to record some songs with me. I always write hundreds of songs a year and I was feeling frustrated with having so many songs unreleased. My old band Fervid wasn’t getting together a lot and I decided I would just start an extra band.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?
It’s just slightly alternative guitar songs with a sixties/ninetees feel. We like songs short and melodic.
What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
I can buy gear and record all my music myself.
What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?
An audio recorder on my phone for recording ideas quickly and easily.
Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?
ABBA: Slipping Trough my Fingers
How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?
Lyrically, I always mix personal stuff with things from other people’s lives and random thoughts that I find interesting.
What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?
I want Secret Molecules songs to be like coffee, cookies or a favorite tv-series/sitcom. The songs should not be too intense and just generally fun to listen too. I don’t mind if they’re not very original or even repetitive. As long as their good to come home to.
What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?
It’s mostly about marketing. In all different branches of art.
What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?
We don’t have a dream venue. We’d like to record at Abbey Road though.
If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Kurt Lennon. (a nice combo)
Where can our listeners follow and support your music? (Website,Spotify, IG, links)
We’re on Spotify, Deezer, Tidal etc.
Looking toward the future, what’s your dream for the next chapter of your musical journey?
To make a really great album.
What do you hope listeners will discover about you along the way?
That we can deliver good short melodic poprock songs time and again.
