Formula Indie Sessions _ Interview with Grounded to fly

Grounded to Fly

What is your earliest memory connected to music?

Me listening to the Temptations with my father when I was a child. He tried teaching me how they danced. I don’t believe it worked.

How did your passion for creating music begin?

I always loved listening to music(80’s child). Over the years, music in general has seemed to diminish in quality and content. I thought I would try my hand at improving the situation. I don’t know if I am helping or making it worse. In my mind, I am trying to make it better.

What’s the story behind your current music project?

My father was a Vietnam vet who struggled with depression and loss. He wrote some of these feelings and memories down. I am trying to bring these feelings and memories back to honor his memory and to honor and encourage those who have experienced loss and depression due to war.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

I would say it’s a mix of The Smiths sarcastic yet serious take on lifes events, with a bit of post-punk/80’s synth sprinkled in.

What is one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?

That I need to take my time and not be concerned with what other musicians are doing.

What tools, instruments, or software are essential in your creative process?

I  use Studio One as a D.A.W. and a Peavey analog mixer to plug guitars, synths, vocals, and bass into.

Which indie artist or song are you loving right now?

The Drums (album Portamento) and CAKE (song Never There).

How have your personal experiences influenced your music and artistic vision?

They have taught me not to care about what other people are doing, but at the same time, care about the person and what they are doing.

What emotions or messages do you hope listeners take from your work?

I like to try and put messages in the music that people can releate to… either in a positive or negative way. To encourage them to start doing one thing or stop doing something else.

What’s the most important lesson music has taught you so far?

That music is an expression about what an individual artist has experienced or how they view life. It should ultimately be a tool to ennoble humanity.

What is a dream venue or festival you would love to perform at?

TRNSMT Festival in Glasgow, Scotland.

If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I would love to collaborate with Morrissey and Jonathan Bree. They are very unique artisits that produce quality music and operate outside of the mainstream.
