SHORT INTERVIEW SERIES : Saint Simmons Looking ICE

What’s the story behind your latest release?
My entire EP, Good Grief, is centered around the loss of my son, Santiago. While grieving, so many emotions surfaced that I had hidden for a long time, and I had to have a personal conversation with God. Through the healing process, I went from a very dark place to eventually seeing hope again.
“Blue Skies and Hydrangeas” is about my mother-in-law, who has dementia. Every day we get to spend with her—whether laughing or simply interacting—is a blessing. This song is a reminder to never waste a moment or an opportunity to love her before it’s too late.
What role does faith play in your music?
God is everything to me. My faith comes first in my life, so it naturally finds its way into my music. Even when I’m transparently disappointed with how certain things turn out, ultimately my faith in Jesus never falters.
What was the recording process like? Did you work on this project alone?
I had two incredible friends who partnered with me in my journey through grief. They listened to my stories and found ways to produce around my words. Those two people are Keiko Sugihara and Ejimofor “EJ” Oruche.
How would you describe your sound?
We love to be experimental! While we understand what works traditionally, we intentionally search for authentic ways to create a sound that feels just as vulnerable and raw as the lyrics themselves.
What’s one thing you’ve learned that completely changed the way you make music?
Humility goes a long way. Listen to your team. Sometimes I had to rewrite things over and over, but the end result was always that much better. I wouldn’t have submitted to anyone else beforehand the way I did this time.
What tools or software do you rely on in your studio?
Mostly Logic and a few mics. We made this entire project in EJ’s garage!
What’s one song from another indie artist that you love right now?
“Weightless” by Terron Brooks. His whole album, Open, is incredible.
What’s next for you? Any upcoming releases or shows?
Yes! I have a new song called Oscillate dropping very, very soon. I hope you enjoy it!
