His debut album ‘Haunting Ambition’ arrived in August, 2017 and was nominated for the Scottish Album of the Year Awards (SAY). The single ‘Kamikaze’ found its way around various stations and was later featured on the website of U.S rock band ‘Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’ in Feb 2018. The song was also reviewed by California based magazine ‘Indiepulse’ and described as “Bewitching and Sublime”. In support of the album’s release, Kev did a small independent tour round the UK as part of a trio and also played some memorable solo performances. It was during this period he developed further as a performer sharing stages with Bill Ryder-Jones , John Power, Ben ottewell, Azziz Ibrahim and was even invited to open for Tony Christie and his band at Glasgow’s St. Lukes. As a trio the band supported Canadian rock outfit, The Glorious Sons, Bang Bang Romeo and Danny Bryant, they also played a handful of small UK festivals. At the beginning of 2020, with a new focus and sound, Kev Howell began recording tracks for his sophomore album at Maybank Studios in Glasgow alongside Matt Harvey and put together a new band line-up. The first track from those sessions ‘Arrows’ was released later in the summer, it was chosen as the first single because it was a song people could relate to and not just during the pandemic, due to the nature and message of the song “you are not alone”. The track was Kev’s first to be aired on BBC Introducing, drawing comparisons to The Black Keys , Gary Clarke Jr. and Arctic Monkeys. Kev’s distinct vocals and poignant lyrics have been credited in recent reviews, along with his guitar work.
